Hamburg combines an impressive history with plenty of experiences to discover: from the red brick and canals of the Speicherstadt to eight centuries of art and a glimpse into model-making. When planning your trip, it’s worth starting by choosing the themes that interest you most.

The Speicherstadt and maritime history

The Speicherstadt is a complex of red-brick warehouses, canals, bridges and streets. It was built near the Port of Hamburg from the late 19th century onwards and was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2015. Its architecture brings the city’s history to life: the warehouses and waterways are part of an architectural ensemble whose character is quite different from that of a single museum.

If you’re interested in shipping and naval history, the Kaispeicher B in the Speicherstadt offers a special addition: it houses the world’s largest private collection of maritime treasures from 3,000 years of shipping and naval history. The Speicherstadt and the collection have different emphases: one tells the story of a warehouse complex, while the other features maritime objects spanning a long period of history.

Art and landmark buildings

The Hamburger Kunsthalle is one of Germany’s most important and largest art museums. Its collection spans eight centuries of European art history, from the Middle Ages to the present day. This offers a broad sweep through time: rather than focusing on just one period, you can discover different chapters of art history in a single collection.

Hamburg City Hall also shapes the cityscape with its architecture. It was built between 1886 and 1897 and is located in the city centre. The art collection and the City Hall offer different ways to experience Hamburg’s culture: through works spanning several centuries, and through the architecture of a single landmark building.

The Kunsthalle offers participatory art activities for children aged five and over and their families. These include a weekly family session and holiday workshops. If these activities are important to your plans, check the current dates before your visit.

Experiences ranging from model-making to chocolate

At Miniatur Wunderland, you can watch model makers and technical teams at work as they create a new landscape in the open construction areas and workshops. The process becomes part of the experience, alongside the finished model. Specific visitor arrangements may change, so check the current options before your visit.

At CHOCOVERSUM, chocolate becomes an experience that takes you from the aroma of the cocoa bean to a bar you create yourself. The focus is on the journey from the starting point to your own creation. This offers a different perspective from viewing completed collection pieces or historic buildings: the theme here is chocolate and how it is made. Booking arrangements may change, so check the current booking options in advance.

If you’d like to combine animals with landscaped open spaces, consider Hagenbeck Zoo. The 19-hectare zoo is home to more than 1,400 animals from over 140 species and includes botanical diversity, listed panoramas, open-air enclosures and numerous cultural buildings. Animal numbers may change over time.

Seasonal highlights and getting there

From May to September, colourful water-light concerts take place every evening on the park lake at Planten un Blomen. This set seasonal period can help with your travel planning: if the experience is on your wish list, plan your dates for these months and check the specific event dates before your trip.

The U3 to Baumwall, bus routes 111 and 6, and HADAG Harbour Ferry 72 are listed as options for getting to the Elbphilharmonie. Stops or piers are located at Baumwall, Am Kaiserkai, Auf dem Sande and the Elbphilharmonie. Check current timetables before setting out.
