Hilders lies in the heart of the Rhön Biosphere Reserve and the Hessian Rhön Nature Park. Nature observation, circular walks, long-distance hiking trails, cycling and local history reveal different sides of a stay here. The bird trail focuses on native birdlife and birdsong; at Buchschirm, the focus is on panoramic views and the night sky, while the Historic Circular Trail introduces landmarks in the town center. When planning your trip, it helps to consider what kind of experience you are looking for: listening to and learning about nature, taking in the landscape from above, or discovering the history of the town.

Rhön landscapes and panoramic views

Buchschirm is the local mountain of Hilders. At 746 meters, the “Krone” viewing platform offers 360° panoramic views across the Hochrhön, the Ulster Valley and far into Thuringia. Buchschirm is also home to the Ulstertal Star Cinema, with a special reclining seat for observing the night sky. Two perspectives thus come together in one place: the expansive panorama across the landscape and the view of the sky. If far-reaching views and the starry sky are among your interests, Buchschirm is a clearly defined highlight to consider when choosing your activities.

Hiking between the bird trail and long-distance trail

The bird trail in Ritterschlucht is around 3 kilometers long. At 14 information boards, you can learn about native birdlife; QR codes let you listen to the calls of the birds featured at each stop. The trail combines information along the way with an audio experience of the birds. Another option is Rhön Circular Trail 1, “Ulster & Fish Nature Trail”: this easy loop is 3 kilometers long, takes about an hour to walk and has 27 meters of elevation gain. It starts at the Hilders Community Center, follows the Ulster and the Fish Nature Trail via Sandenhof, and returns to Hilders. Both routes are around three kilometers long, but each offers a different focus: birdsong and information boards on one, a circular route along the Ulster on the other.

Hilders is directly connected to the HOCHRHÖNER® long-distance hiking trail via several marked access routes. From Hilders, you can start or continue a long-distance hike. The hiking bus takes visitors to selected trailheads, from where you can hike back along a route of your choice. Unlike the loop starting at the Community Center, this option lets you choose your own return route. Before setting out, check the hiking bus’s current operating days, fares and destinations, as these may change.

Cycling has its own appeal here, too: the Milseburg Cycle Path follows the former Rhön Railway line through the countryside between Hilders and Fulda. Unlike the hiking trails, this route focuses on cycling along a former railway line. The different types of routes can shape your plans: a circular hike with a stated walking time, marked access routes to the long-distance trail, a hiking bus connection, or a cycling route between Hilders and Fulda.

History in the town center and at Auersburg

The Historic Circular Trail in Hilders passes through the town center and introduces historic buildings, former inns, mills, churches and other landmarks associated with the development of Hilders. Its focus is therefore on several places within the town itself. Another historic site is the ruin of Auersburg Castle on the southern slope of Auersberg. The ring-wall complex was probably built around or after 1350 and is now a popular destination for hikers and day-trippers. If you are interested in local history, you can choose between a circular route featuring various sites and a single historic complex.

Choose Hilders as your base

If you are traveling with family and enjoy hiking, you could compare the easy circular walk with its stated walking time, the access routes to the HOCHRHÖNER® and the hiking bus to selected trailheads. Birdsong and information boards, the view from Buchschirm, cycling and local history offer different experiences. Think together about which of these experiences you would like to shape your stay; this helps you choose accommodation that suits your travel group’s interests.
