Wildeck combines nature watching with historical traces: the landscape takes center stage in the Rhäden nature reserve, while the Wildecker Valley and the border history trail offer insights into the area’s history. This lets you shape your stay around different interests—from a walk or bike ride to exploring historic sites.

Nature and wildlife watching in Rhäden

The Rhäden nature reserve lies within the municipality of Wildeck and extends into Werra-Suhl-Tal in Thuringia. It is an important habitat for threatened and endangered bird species, as well as other animals and plants. In the wider travel destination of Hersfeld-Rotenburg, the protected area is part of the Green Belt Germany biotope network.

The Rhäden circular trail is about eight kilometers long and can be covered on foot or by bike. Four viewing platforms offer places to take in the views across the area. At the observation stands along the trail, you can use spotting scopes free of charge. Public parking areas are located at the edge of the nature reserve. The approximate distance gives you an idea of the length of the route; its special appeal also lies in the opportunity to observe nature and birds along the way.

Trails with different themes

Those interested in the history of the border fortifications will find a dedicated historical route on the border history trail. The trail is about one kilometer long and presents the different stages of the border fortifications. Former border installations can be viewed along the way. This makes the trail a shorter, history-focused alternative to the approximately eight-kilometer Rhäden circular trail, which focuses on nature.

The “Historic Wildecker Valley” circular trail also looks to the past, exploring the history of the valley and its historic sites. The two trails show the different ways to discover the area’s history—one through the border fortifications, the other through the historic sites of the valley.

Historic landmarks in the Wildecker Valley

The Wildecker Valley was once known as “Hessian Sanssouci.” The name referred to the former palace and parklands. The valley’s historic landmarks include Inselsteich pond and a 22-meter-high sandstone obelisk. Alongside the valley’s landscape, these landmarks give it a distinctive cultural and historical character.

Another historic site is Blumenstein Castle in the woods above the Wildecker Valley near Raßdorf. A section of the moat and cellar walls have survived from the medieval castle. Together with the sites on the “Historic Wildecker Valley” circular trail, this place broadens the view of the area’s history: here, the focus is on surviving structural remains; there, on the history of the valley and its historic sites.

Events and regional culture

The annual Richelsdorf equestrian and show-jumping festival draws visitors to Wildeck from all over Germany and is traditionally held at Whitsun. Exact dates and the program may change. If you want to plan your travel dates around the festival, check both before making arrangements.

The wider travel destination of Hersfeld-Rotenburg is also home to the Bad Hersfeld Festival, held annually in the collegiate church ruins since 1951. In Bad Hersfeld, the Lullus Festival has also been celebrated every year since 852, without interruption, during the week of October 16 in honor of the town’s founder, Lullus. These events are part of the region’s cultural calendar; Wildeck’s nature and history sites have a distinct focus of their own.

Plan your stay and accommodation

If the Richelsdorf festival is the reason for your trip, take its date into account when planning. This helps you find a stay that suits the kind of visit you have in mind in Wildeck.
