Discover Eschbach: Church, Hiking Trails and Cliffs
Accommodation in Eschbach
In Eschbach, local history meets a variety of routes through the landscape. The Evangelical Church of St. Alban, a historic hiking trail with 18 stops and the shorter Eule Adventure Trail offer different starting points for planning a trip. The Eschbach Cliffs are also among the region’s distinctive destinations.
The Church of St. Alban and its history
The Evangelical Church of St. Alban in Eschbach is listed as a cultural monument. A chapel on this site was first mentioned in 1388; the foundation stone for the present building was laid in 1843. These dates mark two distinct stages in the building’s history. Historic furnishings include a gravestone from the 16th century, a communion chalice dating from 1681 and an organ by Daniel Rassmann. Together, these examples show how far back the church’s historical records reach and how varied their forms are.
Hiking trails with different focuses
The Historic Hiking Trail in Eschbach in the Taunus is about 7 kilometres long and has 18 stops. Information accessed via QR codes covers local history and the landscape. The listed stops include the Evangelical Church, the Old School, the Old Waterworks, the Saienstein and the Eschbach Cliffs. Historic buildings and structures sit alongside scenic landmarks, and the stops offer a range of topics to discover along the way.
The Eule Eschbach Adventure Trail is shorter, at about 3 kilometres. It passes through fields, woodland and residential areas, and starts at a bus stop. Comparing the approximate lengths, the Historic Hiking Trail, at about 7 kilometres, offers a longer route as well as its 18 information stops. The Owl Trail has a different focus: its route passes through several types of landscape. You can therefore choose between the two trails depending on whether you would like to focus on local history at the stops or on the changing scenery of fields, woodland and residential areas.
The Eschbach Cliffs are also among the highlights of the Buchfinken Route. In the wider destination of Usingen, the cliffs also shape the landscape: they are 12 metres high and form a striking contrast with the gently rolling scenery of Taunus Nature Park. Located in the heart of the Usinger Land, the cliffs are a destination for hikers and a popular climbing crag. From there, views extend across the Usinger Basin and the Taunus.
More experiences in the wider destination of Usingen
If you are planning your stay beyond Eschbach’s trails and sights, the wider destination of Usingen offers more cultural and scenic points of interest. The preserved grounds of the Schlossgarten are close to the former Usingen Castle and Schlossplatz; their history dates back to the 17th century, to the time of Walrad, the first Prince of Nassau-Usingen. In the upper part of the Schlossgarten, which is open to visitors, you will find a fountain, a monument to Prince Walrad erected in 1905 and a war memorial. The Schlossgarten also includes the adjoining rose garden and a nature-themed playground in the upper area.
The two Usingen museums also have different focuses. The Museum of Prehistory and Early History, in the basement of the historic town hall, displays archaeological finds from the Usinger Land, spanning the Palaeolithic period to the Germanic era. The exhibition is open every other Sunday from 2 to 5 pm, from spring through autumn. Special tours for groups, including school classes, and, in exceptional cases, for individuals can be arranged outside regular opening hours by appointment. Check opening dates before your visit. The Usingen City Museum, housed in the historic Kavaliershaus, focuses on notable Usingen residents and historic household items and tools dating from the 17th century to around 1950.
If you are planning a trip for a particular date, events in Usingen may also be of interest. The Laurentius Market takes place in September and includes the Laurentius fair, a general market, a country fair and district livestock shows. In summer, the Schlossgarten hosts events including a family festival during the Hessian summer holidays, a summer night festival and a rose garden festival. Event dates may vary, so check the programme for your planned visit.
