Discover Dillenburg: History, Stud Farm and Nature
Accommodation in Dillenburg
Dillenburg combines the history of the House of Orange and mining heritage with a traditional stud farm and trails through the countryside. Families and other explorers can choose from a range of activities: museums and historic sites, a wildlife park with a playground and petting zoo, or a hike around Donsbach. The experiences you want to shape your stay can also help guide your choice of accommodation.
The House of Orange and Dillenburg’s museums
The 41-metre-high Wilhelm Tower was built between 1872 and 1875 on the former upper castle courtyard as a memorial to William I, Prince of Orange. The Orange-Nassau Museum is housed in the tower. Numerous exhibits and richly illustrated texts explore William I and his fight for the Netherlands’ freedom. This brings together a view of a monument and an exploration of its historical significance.
Parts of Dillenburg’s defensive fortifications have been uncovered on Castle Hill: underground defenses with bastions and defensive passages known as casemates. The town describes their scale as unique in Germany. A guided tour of Dillenburg’s underground passages ends with a visit to the well in the Lion’s Den and the Rubens Prison. It thus leads from the fortifications to specific places associated with the history of Castle Hill.
Villa GrĂĽn also brings together architectural history and a museum. The neoclassical villa of mine owner Carl GrĂĽn was built in 1914/15; since 1983, it has housed the Museum of Economic History. In Oberscheld, the 140-metre-long Ypsilanta mine offers a different way to explore mining history: it once served as a drainage adit and can now be entered through a restored entrance.
Stud farm traditions and special tours
The cultural and historic grounds of the Dillenburg State Stud shape the townscape and preserve a centuries-old tradition. An in-depth tour takes visitors through the stables and the large riding hall, offering an insight into the state-owned riding and driving school. In the Brunnenhof, visitors can see horses at work and, where applicable, being hitched to historic carriages. The Carriage Museum is housed in the Orangery, built in 1719. As booking conditions may change, it is advisable to check them before planning your tour.
Wildlife park and trails around Donsbach
Donsbach Wildlife Park offers a different focus from the history museums. Its spacious, species-appropriate outdoor enclosures allow visitors, especially children, to experience nature and animal behavior up close. A playground and petting zoo round out the attractions. Families who enjoy variety in their outings can therefore combine wildlife watching with other activities in one place.
The Wacholderweg is a 16-kilometre certified circular trail and one of eight additional Rothaarsteig Trails. It loops around the district of Donsbach and begins and ends at the village community center or the wildlife park in Dillenburg-Donsbach. Its stated length makes it easier to plan the hike as a separate activity. If you want to explore more of Dillenburg, the Oranierpfad offers another option: it loops around the town and passes natural monuments, geological features and historic buildings.
The Historic Trail also helps visitors find their way around Dillenburg. Signs mark the stops, and QR codes provide information about the sites as text or audio files. As you explore, you can choose between simply taking in the sights and reading or listening to additional explanations.
Choose accommodation based on your travel interests
The activities that appeal to you can help guide your search for accommodation in Dillenburg: if you are interested in architectural and urban history, the museums, stud farm and sites on Castle Hill can help shape your itinerary. If hiking and wildlife watching are your priorities, you can consider the Wacholderweg, the Oranierpfad and the wildlife park. This lets you choose accommodation to suit your plans without reducing the range of experiences to a single type of trip.
