Culture in the wider Hadamar area

The Hadamar City Museum is located in the Marstall building of Hadamar Castle, a service building dating from around 1625. Its permanent exhibition invites visitors to explore Hadamar’s past and present through thematic displays arranged in different sections and presented from various perspectives. Activity stations offer children and families a playful way to engage with history.

The Glass Museum at Hadamar Castle explores a wide range of topics related to glass art, which has a tradition in Hadamar spanning more than 70 years. The museum is housed in the renovated living quarters of Prince Johann Ludwig, the magnificent former residence of the princely family. Another special exhibition is the Hadamar Nativity Scene Display: spread across seven rooms, it features nativity scenes from around the world.

Visitors who get to know Hadamar on a classic guided city tour encounter a variety of architectural styles and periods. Stops include the grounds of the Renaissance castle, the Gothic Church of Our Lady, and the Baroque town parish church.

Memorial and garden exhibition

The Hadamar Memorial is located in the historic building of the former Hadamar killing centre. Visitors can tour historic rooms and explore the grounds. The permanent exhibition “Transferred to Hadamar: The History of a Nazi ‘Euthanasia’ Killing Centre” tells the story of the Nazi “euthanasia” murders in Hadamar in 1941 and from 1942 to 1945. The memorial is about a ten-minute walk from Hadamar railway station.

The outdoor exhibition “Garden – Institution Cemetery – Memorial Site” focuses on the grounds of the former institution, particularly the former institution cemetery and the site, which was transformed into a memorial landscape in 1964. It is accessible even outside the memorial’s opening hours. The indoor displays and outdoor exhibition therefore explore different subjects while both focusing on this historic site.

The “Wunderschön Wandern” hiking map published by the Hadamar municipal administration features 17 varied circular hiking trails around Hadamar. Two routes showcase different landscapes: RWW 1 starts at the swimming pool in Hadamar, passes a 400-year-old oak tree, and continues into Niederhadamar Forest. RWW 9 leads from Herzenberg towards Oberzeuzheim and Niederzeuzheim, along the banks of the Elbbach, and back to the town of Hadamar. Check local route conditions before setting out.

Signposted circular hiking trails lead through the recreational areas and nature reserves near Hadamar; along the way, they offer distant views of the heights of the Westerwald and the Lahn Valley. Hadamar also offers helpful route information for cycling: long-distance cycle route R8 leads to Hadamar. From there, regional cycle routes branch off for further exploration of the area, connecting destinations in the nearby Lahn Valley and Westerwald.

It was established in the mid-1990s and attracts visitors interested in botany and rose culture during the summer months.
