Weißenborn combines a distinctive natural landscape with tangible traces of local history: Kalkberg lies on the northern edge of the village, while the hiking trail, ancestral home and church each offer a different focus.

Limestone slope on the edge of the village

The “Kalkberg bei Weißenborn” FFH protected area lies within the municipality of Ottrau, right on the northern edge of Weißenborn. It covers 18.51 hectares and includes a south-facing limestone slope with juniper and orchids. In Weißenborn, this clearly defined natural feature sits alongside the cultural heritage around the ancestral home and church.

Hiking with different focuses

Guided hikes are offered on the Cultural History Trail in Weißenborn. Depending on the booking option, fairy-tale characters performed by amateur actors appear at eight stops, including a Goose Girl with real geese. The Goose Girl makes for a particularly vivid fairy-tale motif; however, which characters appear depends on the option booked. If this theatrical element is important to you, check the details before your trip.

The Cultural History Trail includes a 4.6-kilometre multi-geocaching loop. It takes about two hours and starts at the Brothers Grimm ancestral home at Lindenstraße 5. Its length and approximate duration provide a concrete timeframe for planning. Check the latest details about the geocaching offer in advance.

Cycle route and local history

The Rotkäppchenland railway cycle path follows the route of the former Knüllwaldbahn railway and passes through Weißenborn. Its maximum gradient is 2.8 percent; the path is easy to ride and is also suitable for family outings. Alongside the guided hikes, it offers another way to get around: cycling along a former railway line.

The Brothers Grimm ancestral home stands in Weißenborn. A bronze plaque on the building recalls the original appearance of the former half-timbered house. The church adds another perspective on local history: its oldest parts are Romanesque, and it was remodelled in the Baroque period. Different historical periods can therefore be seen in a single building.

More nature and history in the wider destination of Ottrau

In the wider destination of Ottrau, the Immichenhain ponds and the “Historic Boundaries” route offer their own nature and history themes. The Immichenhain ponds area covers about 23.2 hectares and has been a nature reserve since 1985. Since 2008, an area of the same size and name has also been designated as an FFH protected area.

The “Historic Boundaries” route is just under ten kilometres long and features historic boundary stones, some of which date back at least to the 16th century. It passes four springs in the Immichenhain district and skirts the “Immichenhainer Teiche” nature reserve, which originally comprised seven small lakes. From the “Immichenhain-Blick” bench, the view extends across the village of Immichenhain, with the chapel of the former monastery and the buildings of the present-day state estate; from there, the Bodenbach valley opens up towards Schrecksbach.

The former monastery church in Immichenhain is also part of the wider destination of Ottrau. It was built in the Gothic style in the early 13th century. Surviving wall paintings date from the first half of the 14th century; large epitaphs from the 17th century reveal part of the family history of the Lords of Diede.
