Discover Schlitz through its striking contrasts: a keep dating from the 14th century, a distinctive Advent tradition and a distilling history stretching back to 1585 shape the range of experiences on offer. There is also a historic castle complex and opportunities to explore the surrounding area by bike. When planning your trip, consider whether history, activity or culinary delights should be the main focus.

The Tower, the View and Schlitz’s History

The Hinterturm is a 36-metre-high keep dating from the 14th century. From here, you can enjoy views across the Schlitzerland. On certain days, the viewing point is accessible by lift. The tower thus combines a clear view of the surrounding area with a historic building in the town. If you would like to learn about Schlitz’s history, you can also follow the historic town trail, available as a printable version in German and English.

The Schlitz Castle Museum can also be included in your historical exploration: it is located in the Vorderburg. Schloss Hallenburg tells the story of a different era. Once a castle and residence of the Counts of Schlitz, it was transformed between 1706 and 1712 into a new late-Baroque palace with a mansard roof, based on plans by the French architect Louis Remy de la Fosse. The different histories of its construction and use give visitors several points of connection to the past.

The Schlitz Candle and Advent in Town

Since 1991, on every Advent weekend, red fabric panels have transformed the keep of the Hinterburg into the 42-metre-high Schlitz Candle. As the world’s largest Christmas candle, it shines above Schlitz’s historic market square. Its height and its recurring appearance each Advent weekend make it a distinctive seasonal sight. If you are planning your trip around this tradition, Advent is the right time to visit.

Cycling and Distilling Tradition

The 93-kilometre Vulkanradweg begins or ends in Schlitz and follows the route of a former railway line. This gives the cycle path a distinct historical connection: it traces an old railway route. For a ride in the opposite direction, the Vogelsberger Vulkan-Express takes bicycles free of charge to the Hoherodskopf; from there, you can cycle downhill along the Vulkanradweg.

Another option for visitors is the Schlitzer Distillery, whose distilling tradition dates back to 1585. The approximately two-hour experience tour costs 15 euros per person and includes a tasting of Mild Schlitzers, classic fruit brandies, fruit and herbal liqueurs, and a premium product. The tour takes you through all three distilleries and into the historic whisky warehouse. As tour details may change, it is advisable to check the latest information before your visit.

At the Whisky Lounge, Single Malt, Single Grain and Wheat Malt are tasted side by side, along with whisky liqueur and selected cask-strength whiskies. The selection may change. The distillery therefore offers different ways to explore its products: the experience tour combines a visit to the distilleries with a tasting, while the Whisky Lounge directly compares different whisky categories.

The Vogelsberg Region as a Wider Travel Destination

The wider Vogelsberg travel destination also offers distinctive nature and cultural experiences. The Vogelsberg is Europe’s largest volcanic region. At the Vulkaneum in Schotten, a multimedia exhibition explains volcanism and the geology of the Vogelsberg; hands-on stations and interactive exhibits let visitors experience the past first-hand. At the Hoherodskopf, the treetop walkway is 500 metres long in total and features suspension bridges. Those who prefer a longer hike can take the 14-kilometre GipfelTour Schotten, a route over four peaks in the Oberwald. It also leads through species-rich mountain meadows and varied woodland with rugged basalt formations.

Choosing Accommodation to Suit Your Travel Interests

When looking for accommodation for your trip to Schlitz, it helps to first decide what you would like to focus on: historic sites and views, cycling, or experiences centred on the distillery. If you have several interests, consider which one should shape your stay and which can be an additional activity.
