Rebgeshain: Bakehouse, Village History and Vogelsberg
Accommodation in Rebgeshain
Rebgeshain brings together a historic bakehouse, a cemetery complex and a moderately difficult mountain biking circuit. This gives you different focuses to consider when planning your trip: architectural and local history on the one hand, and an active tour through the Vogelsberg landscape on the other.
Bakehouse and Village History
At Brunnenweg 2 stands a bakehouse whose core dates back to 1830. It retains a combination of solid basalt and brick construction, as well as shingled half-timbering. The bakery’s equipment has also been preserved, along with an adjoining room where cakes could be sampled. The bakehouse is listed as a Hessian cultural monument and protected because of its original importance to village life. Its construction, former use and communal function come together in one building.
Rebgeshain’s origins also go back a long way: they date to between the 8th and 12th centuries. The place name originated in the region’s Hagen settlements, offering another way to explore the history of the village. Another historic building is the schoolhouse, which dates from 1813. In 1910, Rebgeshain had a one-class elementary school.
Cemetery Complex and Protected Landscape
The cemetery complex brings together several historic structures. Its basalt enclosure dates from the 19th century; a portal is lined with linden trees and is of historical and cultural interest. The complex also includes a memorial to soldiers or fallen servicemen from Rebgeshain, erected after the First World War. The cemetery hall was built in 1972 to a design by Walter Ruppel and features remarkable contemporary architecture. The different periods of construction give the complex its own historical context.
The landscape is also connected to a protected area: the Rebgeshain district lies within the Hoher Vogelsberg FFH area.
Cycling Through the Vogelsberg
The 33.2-kilometre MTB Route 7 Ulrichstein is described as a moderately difficult circular route through the Vulkanregion Vogelsberg Nature Park. It passes through the Breungeshainer Heide nature reserve and by the Landgrafenborn spring. It then follows mixed forest and a paved farm road to Rebgeshain, continuing along the edge of the village in the direction of Ulrichstein. Its length and difficulty give you specific points of reference when weighing up an active day against the village’s historical and cultural attractions.
