Dodenau combines wildlife watching with a range of ways to enjoy the outdoors. The town has a heated outdoor swimming pool, a wildlife park and cross-country ski trails groomed in winter. The Eder landscape, with its species-rich floodplain, is another highlight. You can tailor your stay to your interests: watch animals, go hiking or explore winter activities. Water conditions, local permits and the pool’s opening arrangements may vary.

Wildlife Park and Eder Landscape

The wildlife park covers more than ten hectares. There, you can observe fallow deer, red deer and mouflons at close range. Of course, how easy it is to see the animals may vary. By contrast, the Eder offers a broader perspective: the river connects Dodenau with Battenberg through an extensive floodplain, parts of which are protected and which is known for its variety of plants and animals.

You can experience the landscape by hiking, fishing, cycling, boating or swimming. This offers a range of options, from trails on land to activities on the water. Water conditions and local permits may vary; take these conditions into account, especially for activities on the water.

Hiking and Activities Throughout the Seasons

The marked hiking trail network in the Battenberg-Dodenau area covers 130 kilometres; some routes pass through nature reserves. Mountain biking is also possible. This means you can choose from different ways to get around, from hiking on marked trails to mountain biking.

For a winter trip, the cross-country ski trails groomed in Dodenau offer a seasonal option. Check their availability before travelling. A heated outdoor swimming pool adds to the range of activities; its opening arrangements may vary.

More to Discover in the Battenberg (Eder) Destination

The wider Battenberg (Eder) destination also offers cultural attractions and scenic viewpoints. The Baroque garden at Neuburg Castle in Battenberg (Eder) covers around 2,700 square metres and is divided into several terraces. Neuburg Castle was built in 1732 by chief forester Karl Johann Philipp Löner von Laurenburg and served as Landgrave Ludwig VIII’s hunting lodge until 1768.

At the Burgbergstollen visitor mine, you can explore the 150-year-old tunnels and shafts with an experienced mine guide; protective clothing and a miner’s lamp are provided. Opening times may change, so check before your visit.

Kellerburg can only be reached on foot; several hiking trails lead to Kellerburg Tower on Battenberg Castle Hill. You can reach the viewing platform by climbing 88 steps. In good weather, the distant views extend to the Marburg Hills, Kahler Asten and Hoher Lohr. The regional attractions each offer a distinct experience: the mine provides a guided tour, while the castle hill involves a walk and a climb to the viewpoint.
