Discover Röddenau: Church and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Röddenau
In Röddenau, the history of the Protestant parish church and hiking trails of very different lengths take centre stage. The present-day church was built by 1819; the Burgwald Trail follows the Eder closely as far as the Röddenau district. Local history, architecture and tours offer a range of ways to plan your trip.
Church and Local History
The present-day Protestant Parish Church in Röddenau replaced an older church building, which was demolished in 1818. The new building was completed by 1819. The church is a transverse building in simple Neoclassical forms, constructed from carefully hewn sandstone blocks. Listed as a cultural monument, it is included in the State of Hesse’s monument register for historical, artistic and urban-planning reasons.
The church’s location is also part of the village’s history: in the old village centre, the church and the court lime tree stood in the middle. The construction of the federal road in 1953 and its widening in 1967/68 split the village centre in two. The church building and the village’s former centre are thus linked by a specific historical context.
Hiking Trails of Different Lengths
The Frankenberg circular hiking trail F3 starts and ends at the Schützenhaus Frankenberg-Röddenau car park, Scheidweg 18. Its Goldbachtal loop is 10 kilometres long and runs via Schwarzen Weg, Alterodskopf and the Goldbachtal. If you choose routes by length, you can compare this loop with the much longer Burgwald Trail, which is 48.89 kilometres long.
As far as the Frankenberg district of Röddenau, the Burgwald Trail runs close to the Eder, above a steep slope with distinctive Eder sandstone cliffs. The cliffs link the route with a striking landscape formation made of this rock.
Frankenberg (Eder): Architecture and Activities
In Frankenberg (Eder), the Historic Town Hall offers another focus for exploring the town’s history. Construction of the third town hall began in 1509; it was intended to resemble a predecessor building that had burned down. The brackets, also known as consoles, support the central oriels on the south, north and west sides and are considered masterpieces of medieval woodcarving.
Built in the 13th century, the Hexenturm is the only one of the original 20 defensive towers of Frankenberg’s town fortifications still standing. Around 50 steps lead to the platform at the top of the tower. If you plan to visit the platform, check current access arrangements.
Nature and leisure destinations offer another way to experience Frankenberg (Eder). At Frankenberg Wildlife Park, visitors can see wild boar, deer, sheep and goats up close; admission is free. The Ederberglandbad has an indoor pool and an outdoor pool and is located very close to the “Teichgelände” local recreation centre.
At the entrance to the Hohenäcker quarry near Frankenberg-Rodenbach, there are an information pavilion and a fossil-hammering area for children. Anyone who wants to hammer there must bring a hammer or similar tool.
Market days and music also help you plan when to visit the town: the weekly market takes place on Saturdays in the town hall of the Historic Town Hall. The Landfrauenmarkt is held every Saturday morning from 8:30 to 12:00 in the Schirn of the Historic Town Hall with its ten towers. The town hall’s carillon was installed in 1999 and can be heard daily between 11:45 and 15:45. If you want to plan your visit around it, check the times in advance.
