Discover Volkmarsen
Accommodation in Volkmarsen
Volkmarsen combines the history of Kugelsburg Castle with trails through the countryside and experiences centered around water. These different themes can help you plan your stay around culture and outdoor activities.
Kugelsburg Castle: Views and the Middle Ages
Built around 1200, Kugelsburg Castle is one of Volkmarsen’s landmarks. Today, it serves as a viewing platform: a free telescope at the top of its round tower offers views of Volkmarsen and the surrounding area. The so-called Witches’ Cellar gives visitors an impression of the Middle Ages. The castle thus offers two distinct perspectives: views of the surrounding area and an encounter with a named place that brings the period to life. If you are interested in the history of the area, you can explore both the building and its medieval interpretation here.
Circular Trails, Cycling and Water
Volkmarsen has circular hiking trails through a scenic area, up to 12 kilometers long. The maximum trail length is a useful guide when planning how much hiking to fit into your day. Cycling enthusiasts can also explore the Twiste Cycle Route, one of the cycling routes around Volkmarsen. The Volkmarsen castle swimming pool has a 60-meter-long water slide. Check the pool’s seasonal opening hours before your trip.
At Sauerbrunnen, you can sample fresh spring water. The recreation area at Sauerbrunnen also has an adventure playground. You’ll find different reasons to take a break there, from sampling the spring water to playing at the playground. This offers a different option for planning your day than hiking or visiting Kugelsburg Castle.
Museum: Tools and Early Finds
The Volkmarsen Museum of History and Agriculture collects antique agricultural machinery, household appliances and tools. The museum also displays archaeological finds from the early Middle Ages, discovered within the boundaries of the Volkmarsen district. Its themes range from agricultural, household and craft equipment to archaeological traces of the area’s early history. If you’d like to broaden your cultural visit beyond Kugelsburg Castle, you’ll find everyday and working tools alongside finds from a much earlier period.
Beyond Volkmarsen: Waldeck-Frankenberg
The wider destination of Waldeck-Frankenberg also offers distinctive nature and culture themes. The ancient beech forests of Kellerwald-Edersee National Park have been a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site since 2011. Another regional hiking option is the 66-kilometer Urwaldsteig Edersee trail. It can be hiked in eight stages or as part of a three-day ranger-guided hike, with each stage covering around 22 kilometers. These different formats offer practical guidance if you’re planning a longer hike in Waldeck-Frankenberg.
In Frankenberg (Eder), the Historic Town Hall is a half-timbered building dating from 1509. Its ten towers represent the town’s ten guilds. The Landfrauen weekly market takes place every Saturday at the Rathaus Schirn, the covered arcade of the town hall; check the date when planning your trip. The GeoFoyer Kalkturm Korbach offers a different regional perspective, showing the landscape and forms of life around Korbach as they were 250 million years ago. There is also an exhibition about the extraction and processing of limestone and its industrial use in the quarry for over 100 years. Waldeck-Frankenberg’s range of themes thus extends from the 1509 town hall to geological history.
