Near Ober-Werbe, steep Zechstein slopes and dolomite cliffs shape the landscape of the Werbetal Valley. The town’s history includes a Romanesque church, a monastery ruin and well-preserved half-timbered houses. A geological outcrop takes you further back in time—to the formation of the Zechstein Sea. There are several ways to discover the town: through its landscape and geological history, on foot or by exploring its historic architecture.

The Werbetal Valley and geological history

The “Zechstein Sea near Ober-Werbe” rock outcrop is a disused quarry. It reveals deposits from the first phase of flooding of the Zechstein Sea, 250 million years ago. The outcrop thus tells the story of a very early period in the Earth’s history, adding a geological perspective on how the visible slopes and cliffs were formed.

Hiking routes with different layouts

From Mühlweg in Ober-Werbe, a hiking trail runs through the Werbetal Valley along the entire nature reserve to Alraft. Another option is the Klosterpfädchen loop trail: it leads from the center of Ober-Werbe to the monastery ruins, with the option of taking a short detour to Langer Stein. When planning your walks, you can choose between a loop with an optional detour and a trail that continues to Alraft.

This lets you plan according to the route format you prefer, without treating the two trails as the same. If you prefer a loop, the Klosterpfädchen is the one to consider. Those following the trail through the Werbetal Valley to Alraft have a different named destination in mind.

Church, monastery ruin and half-timbered houses

Ober-Werbe Church was originally built as a three-aisled Romanesque basilica with a flat roof. “Three-aisled” describes the layout of the church interior; the flat roof is also part of the original design. The baptismal font and pulpit date from 1707. They offer a glimpse of a later period in the church’s furnishings alongside its older architectural style.
