Discover Neerdar
Accommodation in Neerdar
Neerdar is defined by rural tranquillity and gently rising hills. In the valley of the stream of the same name, meadows and mixed forests surround the village. There is plenty to discover both outdoors and in the village’s history, from hiking trails and charcoal-making traditions to remarkable church art.
Charcoal-Making Traditions and Landscape
Traditional charcoal kilns are built at the charcoal-burning site at regular intervals. Demonstrations and events give visitors the chance to learn more about the technique and its importance to the region. This makes charcoal burning a tangible topic for anyone interested in the village’s history as well as its landscape.
Another sociable tradition is the annual potato roast at the Neerdar barbecue station. Potatoes are cooked directly in the hot fire, and the event is designed to be participatory. Dates may vary, so it is worth checking the event schedule before your trip.
St. Pancras Church and Its Details
St. Pancras Church was built in the early 13th century according to the basic design of the stepped churches in the Upland region. Its rectangular nave and square choir form a clearly recognisable floor plan. The furnishings also tell the story of the village’s art history: the Baroque altarpiece is the work of Waldeck Baroque artist Josias Wolrat Brützel. Its reverse bears the signature “Meister Josias Wolrat Brützel Anno 1692”; the altarpiece depicts the Last Judgement.
Another historic detail is the 17th-century sandstone baptismal font. Its central panel bears the Waldeck star. Together, the floor plan, altarpiece and font offer different ways to explore Neerdar’s architectural and artistic history.
Hiking Trails with Different Themes
The Willingen–Neerdar hiking trail (N1) starts and ends at the Neerdar village community centre, Neerdartalstraße 10, 34508 Willingen (Upland). With around 600 metres of elevation gain, it leads to a charcoal kiln and an old charcoal-burning site, and reveals traces of charcoal burning and ironworking. In this way, the trail and the charcoal-making tradition share a common theme.
The Three-Village Trail passes through Neerdar, Bömighausen and Welleringhausen. Its route description offers a different point of reference: the three villages it passes through. The Neerdar hiking car park is a starting point for various hiking trails in the Qualitätsregion Wanderbares Deutschland (Quality Region for Hiking in Germany). This makes it easy to choose between the N1, which is specifically associated with charcoal-burning sites and traditional crafts, and a route through three named villages.
The Barbecue Station and Travel Planning
The Neerdar barbecue station has a covered outdoor grill, a fire pit, tables and benches. It offers a view of the village. The barbecue station must be booked in advance through Neerdar’s local mayor.
Neerdar offers specific attractions for both interests. Tailor your search to the experiences you would like to include in your travel plans.
