Dornumergrode tells the story of settlement and sea-dike history, East Frisian building culture, and a circular cycling tour that starts and ends here. This gives your stay several possible focuses: cycling, the village’s architectural history, or cultural sites in the wider destination of Dornum. When choosing accommodation, it helps to first consider which of these themes you want to shape your trip.

Langwarf and sea-dike history

Dornumergrode was founded on a Langwarf and is surrounded by calcareous marshland. In the early 17th century, the entire foreland ready for diking, from Dornumergrode to Middelsbur, was enclosed by dikes; the Accumer Ee was secured with a sluice structure. This history connects the settlement’s form with the transformation of the landscape through dike building and water engineering. Anyone interested in the region’s development will find a tangible historical connection here: the enclosure by dikes and the securing of the Accumer Ee are part of the same story of the foreland.

Gulfhaus and Villa Dühringshof

The Dornumergrode Vorwerk is a very large Gulfhaus of the East Frisian type. Villa Dühringshof is a striking, detached, two-storey rendered building. The descriptions emphasize different aspects: the Vorwerk stands out for its size and regional building type, while the villa is notable for its detached form, two storeys and rendered exterior. The two buildings therefore offer different points of interest if you want to explore architecture and building history.

Cycling and Boßeln

The approximately 25-kilometre “Der Älteste” circular cycling tour starts and ends in Dornumergrode at junction 18. Part of the route follows the Dornum junction cycling route. About 350 metres after the start, an old terp with two houses can be seen beside the route. Anyone interested in settlement history will find the old terp an illustrative point of reference.

Boßeln on Störtebekerstraße in Dornumergrode offers a different way to be active. The route is approximately four kilometres there and back. Compared with the circular cycling tour, the two activities differ considerably in distance: around 25 kilometres by bike, compared with about four kilometres for Boßeln.

Cultural history in the wider destination of Dornum

In the wider destination of Dornum, Dornum Synagogue has been a memorial site since 1992. The building, which has survived to the present day, was constructed in 1841 and is the only surviving synagogue in East Frisia. A permanent exhibition is devoted to Jewish life. The memorial site is run by the “Synagoge Dornum” association, which is also responsible for the exhibitions.

Dornum Bockwindmühle is also a remarkable testament to regional history: it is the last post mill in East Frisia and has been a local landmark since 1626. Baroque Dornum Water Castle developed from Norderburg, which stood there in the 14th century and belonged to chieftain Hicko Kankena. A gallery runs all the way around the restored Knights’ Hall in the castle. The ceiling is decorated with figurative and ornamental paintings; historical oil paintings on the walls tell the story of the von Closter family and their relatives. Together, these Dornum cultural sites offer further topics for a stay focused on history.

This decision helps you shape your trip around the experiences that matter to you.
