A narrow strip of calcareous marsh, several Warfen and a medieval brick building give Eilsum a clearly recognisable historical character. The village was founded as a Warf village on a strip of calcareous marsh running from northeast to southwest, at an elevation of 5.8 m above sea level. It also has the Oll Deep, which still exists today, and a church bearing traces of several periods of construction and art. This makes local history, church architecture and waterways central to planning your trip—specific themes you can use to decide whether Eilsum suits the focus of your holiday.

Warfen and waterways in Eilsum

The small central Warf has room for three farms. In addition, Eilsum has five other inhabited Warfen, also known as Wehre. The settlement structure is thus made up of several inhabited Warfen, not just the small central one. These figures bring this historical form to life, offering a concrete way to understand how Eilsum is laid out.

In the High Middle Ages, Eilsum was a sluice village with a connection to the sea. The old sluice silted up in 1461 and was demolished; a new sluice was then built at Angernwehr. The canal dug to Greetsiel in 1605 survives to this day as the Oll Deep. The sluice and canal add the connection between land and water to the village’s history. If you are interested in regional history, these different waterworks offer a glimpse into various periods of Eilsum’s past.

Water is also relevant for travellers: Eilsum can be reached by boat via a landing stage on the East Frisian canal network. If you are considering this route, check the latest information about the landing stage in advance. Eilsum also has a public barbecue area that anyone can use.

A church spanning several periods

The Evangelical Reformed Church of Eilsum is a medieval brick church. Its nave was built around 1230 to 1260; the east tower is older. Remains of paintings in the Romanesque zigzag style have been preserved in the apse. The furnishings also provide precise dates: the pulpit by Casper Struiwig bears the year 1738, and the late Gothic bronze baptismal font was cast in 1472. The older tower, the remnants of paintings and the clearly dated furnishings make different periods of construction and art a tangible subject. These details offer clear starting points for conversations about history, without limiting the focus to a single century.

The architectural heritage also includes the Graft at Bolkewehrster Weg 2. It is listed as part of a protected monument and has historical and urban-planning significance.

Eilsum Church is also a stop on the Krummhörn Church Tower Tour: in the published order, it is listed second. The approximately 70 km cycling route visits 21 churches in 19 villages in the Krummhörn. The order and other details may change in future editions; if you are planning to take the tour, follow the information in the relevant edition.

The Krummhörn-Greetsiel holiday region has signposted cycling routes using a junction network. The Church Tower Tour runs from village to village and past the Pilsum Lighthouse, the Marble Arena in Uttum, historic windmills, Osterburg Castle in Groothusen and Manningaburg Castle in Pewsum. The Wadden Sea National Park, part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, is also along the route; you can also explore the fishing village of Greetsiel along the way. The tour therefore ranges from individual churches to many villages and sights across the region.
