Timmeler Meer gives Timmel a distinct waterside character: the lake covers 25 hectares and is an average of nine metres deep. There is also a canoe trip that is unaffected by the tides, riding lessons and visible traces of maritime history. This gives you a range of ways to shape your stay—from an outing on the water to a historic village walk.

Waterways and boat trips

The canoe trip from Timmel to Rorichum is about 13.3 kilometres long and takes approximately three hours. It follows the Rorichumer Tief, where tides have no effect. The starting point is the landing stage at the Paddel- und Pedal station in Timmel; along the way, the route crosses Timmeler Meer. The distance and approximate duration are useful reference points when planning your activities for the day.

At the Paddel- und Pedal station in Timmel, you can rent single and double kayaks, as well as canoes for three, four and ten people. Rental options may vary by season. From Timmeler Meer, boaters can travel via the Ems to the North Sea. If you are interested in a trip aboard a passenger ship, the MS Gretje operates on Timmeler Meer and the Fehntjer Tief. During boat trips, passengers can learn about the history of Großefehn and peat shipping.

Riding lessons, trails and an inclusive playground

The Reitsport-Touristik-Centrum in Timmel offers dressage and show-jumping lessons for riders of all skill levels. Individual and group lessons, as well as training courses, are held regularly. Alongside the water-based activities, this provides a dedicated option for anyone who would like to combine their time in Timmel with equestrian sport.

There are four walking trails of varying lengths in the climatic health resorts of Timmel and Westgroßefehn. Depending on the route, some sections can be used with a rollator or wheelchair; there is also a signposted accessible alternative route. If this information is important for your plans, check the latest trail details before setting out.

The Mehr-Generationen-Park is also located on Timmeler Meer. Its inclusive, accessible playground is intended for people with and without disabilities. The park complements the water-based outings and walking trails with another clearly described place for a diverse range of visitors.

A guided way to explore Timmel on foot is the Historic Village Walk, which takes about two hours. The Großefehn Tourist Information Office offers the walk through Timmel; the meeting point is the village square. Dates and costs are available on request. The time required is also useful for planning your day: the canoe trip takes approximately three hours, and the village walk about two.

Seafaring history and village life

Timmel’s maritime history dates back to the founding of a navigation school in 1846. Associated with this school is the Alte Seefahrtschule in Timmel, a surviving maritime heritage building. The current building was constructed in 1862. The founding year and the building’s history therefore represent two distinct, specifically dated milestones.

The St. Peter and Paul Church also contains a historic memorial: a plaque commemorating Jonas Eilers, with the dates 1768–1778, hangs there. The maypole celebration and the traditional Ostereierlünsen take place on the village square every year. During the season, regular baking days are also held there. These events offer a different insight into Timmel than its maritime architecture or activities on the water.

When looking for accommodation in Timmel, you can start by considering which experiences you would most like to shape your stay. For an active day, the canoe trip and guided village walk—with their different approximate durations—offer a practical guide.
