Bülkau combines a rural village character with stories dating back to the Middle Ages. The village lies along the L 144 as a linear settlement; its impressive farmhouses reflect the agricultural character of the area. History, routes and nature offer different possible focuses for a stay.

Village history and St. John’s Church

Bülkau was established around 1200 as a linear settlement of Dutch colonists and was first mentioned in official documents in 1352. St. John’s Church is a central landmark of the village. It stands on a raised mound and was probably built as a Gothic fieldstone church during the Frisian colonisation.

The building’s history spans several periods: in 1701, the nave was rebuilt on the old foundations as a simple brick hall, while the medieval polygonal choir was retained. A free-standing, square wooden tower stands to the west of the nave. The choir contains a triumphal cross group dating from around 1515. The bronze baptismal font is dated to approximately the 13th century, around 1250 or the second half of that century. Parts of an Arp Schnitger organ case have also been preserved.

Music is also part of church life: the brass ensemble, singing group, and flute and guitar group regularly perform together with the organ at services and events. The parish also holds evening music events. The church thus brings together historic architecture and musical activities, which may be worth considering when planning a culture-focused stay.

By bike, on foot or on the water

Cycling routes along the L 144 and K 21 offer ways to explore Bülkau by bike. The connection between Bovenmoor and Stinstedt is also suitable for cycling trips. Those who prefer to get around on foot can focus on walks in the Aue area; the Aue is also suitable for exploring by bike. This makes it possible to include different kinds of active days in your travel plans without having to follow a fixed daily itinerary.

Canoe trips are possible on the Aue and the Hadelner Canal. Public landing stages along the canal serve canoeists and recreational boat users. The Hadelner Canal connects Bülkau with Odisheim, Osterbruch and Steinau. Anglers have a specific requirement: fishing is permitted at Balksee and on the Hadelner Canal with a fishing licence. Cycling, walks and water activities are therefore different options to consider when choosing the focus of your trip.

Moorland and views across Balksee

Bülkau borders the Balksee and Marginal Moors nature reserve, which offers views of moorland and heathland. A freely accessible observation tower in the reserve provides panoramic views across Balksee. White-tailed eagles can sometimes be spotted from there too—but sightings are possible, not guaranteed on every visit. Nature enthusiasts can combine walks and cycling trips with views of the landscape and an opportunity to observe wildlife.

When looking for accommodation in Bülkau, it helps to first decide what mix you want for your trip: would you like to focus on village and church history, or are you more interested in cycling, walks, water and scenery? Local highlights range from historic architecture to activities on the canal and views of Balksee.
