Hemmoor combines open landscapes with themes of nature, technology and history. At the Hemmoor Moor Meadows, the focus is on breeding birds; the chalk lake adds diving to the picture. The former cement industry, changing art exhibitions and geological traces offer further perspectives. When planning, you can start by considering whether nature observation, cultural history or exercise should be the main focus.

Landscape, Birdlife and the Oste

Hemmoor’s characteristic landscapes include the Oste and the Oste dyke, as well as open meadows and fields. The wooden observation tower at the Hemmoor Moor Meadows is six metres high and overlooks a bird-breeding area of around 30 hectares. There you can observe meadow pipits, lapwings, geese, migratory birds and storks in their natural habitat.

Another highlight on the Oste is the Osten-Hemmoor transporter bridge: it has crossed the river since 1909 and is 38 metres high. This brings together the river landscape and a historic engineering structure—a different focus from birdwatching in the moor meadows.

Culture, Industrial History and Geological History

The Kulturdiele Hemmoor is a Lower Saxon half-timbered house with a 150-square-metre hall and an exhibition room. It hosts changing exhibitions on art and history related to Hemmoor.

The cement heritage trail offers a different focus. This themed route for walkers and cyclists runs through the grounds of the former cement factory. Information boards and exhibits explain the former cement industry as well as the local flora and fauna.

The two offerings also differ in how they present their subjects: the Kulturdiele brings together changing exhibitions in an exhibition room, while the cement heritage trail uses information boards and exhibits along a themed route. This means you can choose not only between topics, but also between two different ways of exploring them.

The Hemmoor spheres broaden the perspective to include geological history: they formed during the Hemmoorian, a geological stage 17 to 21 million years ago. This vast timescale adds a geological dimension to the cultural and industrial history.

Water and Exercise

The Hemmoor chalk lake is a 33-hectare lake with a diving centre. In area, it is similar in size to the roughly 30-hectare bird-breeding area in the moor meadows. This comparison puts two distinct focuses in context: water and diving on the one hand, birdwatching on the other.

The Hemmoor fitness trail with circular walking route offers another way to make your stay active. Its route is designed for use by bicycle; the trail has ten training stations, some of which are accessible. The trail is free of charge and open to everyone. Access and cost information may change, so check before your visit.

Choose Accommodation Based on Your Interests

When looking for accommodation in Hemmoor, you can base your choice on the activities you have planned. Would you like your days to focus on nature observation, an exhibition visit, or perhaps diving and cycling? This prioritisation makes your own idea of the stay the starting point for your search. Then compare options based on your personal accommodation requirements.
