Oberndorf stretches along both sides of the Oste. The river and the town shape the way around here: a walk along the dike offers views of the water on one side and, on the other, houses protected by the dike. Some of these houses have thatched roofs and half-timbered façades. A walk brings the landscape and townscape together, while the Oste is also a setting for shipping and water sports.

Along the Dike and on the Oste

Exploring Oberndorf on foot, a walk along the dike takes you through a clear change between views of the river and houses behind the dike. The houses protected by the dike shape the townscape; some have thatched roofs and half-timbered façades. For visitors who would rather take in the surroundings from the water, river cruises are available aboard the “Mocambo.”

Oste Shipping offers numerous scheduled trips aboard the “Mocambo,” as well as boat charters for up to 75 people. Check the timetable and charter availability before your trip. The riverbank also tells of its connection to the Oste: the ferry promenade features a replica of the old flat-bottomed ferry, along with monuments to the ferryman, Hoffmann von Fallersleben and the sturgeon. A walk and a boat trip offer different perspectives: one follows the dike, while the other takes to the river.

Oberndorf has several mooring options for water sports, including a passenger-ship landing and a sports-boat landing. A total of more than 250 metres of mooring space unaffected by the tides is available on both banks of the Oste; the local facilities offer good conditions for water sports.

Museum and Local History

The Spurensuche – Lebensgeschichten am Fluß museum is housed in a former general store in Oberndorf. It is a modern, interactive museum for visitors of all ages. Many exhibits can be tried out or explored through play, so history is not just something to look at here: visitors can actively discover it through the exhibits.

St. George’s Church also offers tangible evidence of local history and art. Its notable art-historical features include an 1879 Röver organ, a carved altar and a suspended angel. The “derer zu Bobergen” gravestone is also set into the outer wall. The organ, altar and gravestone are distinct details for anyone who wants to take in historical furnishings during their stay, alongside the landscape and shipping.

Plan Your Arrival and Stay

Oberndorf can be reached by train via Wingst station; cyclists can reach the town along the cycle path from Wingst. Check the timetables that apply to your travel date before setting off. A bascule bridge connects the municipality of Oberndorf with the district of Bentwisch.

For travellers with a motorhome, Oberndorf has a designated parking area a few hundred metres from the Oste. Facilities include electricity, a toilet, a shower, a barbecue area and play equipment. As facilities and fees may change, it is advisable to check the latest information before you arrive. Nearby you’ll find places to eat, a grocery store, a passenger-ship landing and a museum.
