Juist brings together mudflats, protected island nature and island culture. The National Park House, with its exhibition on island nature, is located at Kurplatz; at Lake Hammersee, a short walking trail leads around the largest freshwater lake in the East Frisian Islands. Guided mudflat walks, carriage rides and concerts add to the ways you can shape your stay.

Experience and understand nature

Most of Juist’s natural environment is specially protected as part of the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea National Park and has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Wadden Sea since 2009. Lake Hammersee lies in Protection Zone 1, the park’s quiet zone. A short walking trail leads around the lake. As the largest freshwater lake in the East Frisian Islands, it adds a distinctive feature to the island’s natural landscape.

The Juist National Park House is centrally located in town, right at Kurplatz, and features a newly designed exhibition. It provides information about the island’s natural environment within the national park and the Wadden Sea World Heritage Site. The exhibition offers children a way to explore these topics; the trail around Lake Hammersee introduces a different subject: the freshwater lake and its protected-area classification.

Juist as a travel destination in the East Frisian Islands

Juist is one of the seven East Frisian Islands. The islands lie off the coast of Lower Saxony along the East Frisian Peninsula, after which they are named, and are considered a biodiversity hotspot within the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea National Park. This regional context offers a broader perspective on Juist without conflating the characteristics of the island group with those of individual places on Juist.

Mudflat walks in different seasons

Guided mudflat walks on Juist introduce visitors to the flora and fauna of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Wadden Sea. They take place in both summer and winter. For young children, the National Park House team offers mudflat walks covering short distances and passing through shallower areas. The options therefore vary by season and tour format: choose between guided nature interpretation and routes designed specifically for young children.

In summer, National Park Ranger Markus can be found at the information hut at Kalfamer on Wednesdays. There, he shares information about his work and the island’s animals and plants. If you would like to include this meeting point in your plans, check the latest schedule details before your visit.

Carriage rides and specific destinations

Carriage rides are available on Juist through the town and along the beach. For specific destinations, HUF offers rides from Kurplatz to Domäne Bill on Mondays and Fridays; on Wednesdays, a carriage ride runs from Kurplatz to Loog. These stated days of the week can help you plan a ride to a particular destination. Check the current operating days before planning your outing around them.

Music and island history

Open-air concerts featuring rock, pop, Low German and traditional music take place at Juist’s Kurplatz. The range of music gives an impression of the program’s variety; check the relevant dates to see which concerts coincide with your stay.

The building history of the island’s churches also offers a point of reference. The Roman Catholic Church of the Holy Guardian Angels (“Zu den heiligen Schutzengeln”) was built in 1910 as the sixth church on Juist. The Protestant Island Church was built in 1964 as the island’s seventh church. Their different construction dates place both churches within the history of island life.
