Meppen: City History, Culture and Cycling Routes
Accommodation in Meppen
The Hase, Radde and Ems rivers and the Dortmund-Ems Canal meet in Meppen. The Höltingmühle mill stands on a peninsula between the Hase and the canal; the old town is enclosed by the ramparts and moat of the historic fortress. The river landscape, canals and fortress history thus shape very different sides of the town.
Old Town and Fortress History
The historic town hall dates back to 1408 and stands out with its distinctive stepped gable. Around the market square, it contributes to the character of the pedestrian zone in the town centre. If you would like to discover Meppen’s history beyond its individual buildings, guided tours by the Tourist Information Centre offer insights into the town’s history of more than 1,200 years.
Museums, Art and Musical Theatre
The Emsland Archaeology Museum features a replica of a Neolithic megalithic tomb and also illustrates prehistoric times. The museum at the Arenberg Estate provides information about the history of the region. The Koppelschleuse Art Centre offers a different perspective on art, with contemporary art from the region and beyond in its exhibition programme.
During the summer months, Meppen’s open-air theatre stages musical theatre. The programme also includes a musical for families each year; individual productions change. So, alongside historical themes, seasonal stage performances are also on offer when you are planning your travel dates.
Discover Fortress Remains Digitally
The GPS-guided History Tour is a walk taking in Meppen’s buildings, attractions and historic sites, and explores the town’s fortress history. The MEPPEN 1638 tour uses VR and AR to recreate the demolished fortress walls, ditches, bridges, gates, defences and buildings such as Paulsburg. You can use your own mobile device or a device borrowed from the Meppen Tourist Information Centre. Check the current availability of the digital experiences and loan devices in advance.
Cycling Tours in Meppen and the Emsland Region
Themed circular routes for day trips and long-distance cycling routes pass through Meppen. The Hümmlinger Hügel Tour starts in the town. When planning, you can choose between a themed loop for a day trip and a longer cycling route.
In the wider Emsland travel region, the 395-kilometre Emsland Route is a circular route through five landscapes: the Northern Ems Valley, Hümmling, Bourtanger Moor, Hasetal and Southern Emsland. It is very well signposted, mostly flat, paved and traffic-free, and is particularly suitable for beginners and families with children. The route connects 19 towns; towns in the Emsland region along its course can serve as starting and finishing points.
The Hümmling Nature Park is also part of the wider Emsland travel region. It covers around 580 square kilometres in the north-east of the district. Cycling and hiking trails pass information points, historic sites, megalithic tombs and Clemenswerth Palace. The Crane Trail to the Theikenmeer nature reserve offers a specific walking route in the Emsland region: the outward leg is about 2.5 kilometres long, and the return follows the same route, making around 5 kilometres in total. The trail has a viewing platform with panoramic views of Lake Theikenmeer and the Wehmer Dose moorland, as well as a birdwatching hut on the lakeshore.
