Fuhrbach lies on the Soolbach in the Untereichsfeld region. Its well-developed hiking trail network and the views from above the village give the destination a strong connection to the landscape and outdoor activity. St. Pankratius adds a distinctive building, while a memorial stone and a former patrol road recall the history of the inner-German border.

Hiking, Water and Views

Fuhrbach’s network of hiking trails makes it possible to discover nature along the Green Belt. From above the village, views extend to Sonnenstein, in the direction of the Ohm Mountains and as far as the Brocken. Here, different vistas meet specific points along the way: one hiking route passes the “Fuchsloch” shrub park, while the Fuhrbach Route reaches the Soolbach pond.

The history of the border is also part of the impressions along the trails. A memorial stone on the Heinz-Vollmer-Weg section of the Fuhrbach Route marks the former inner-German border. The route follows a former patrol road used by border troops to the “An der Sandgrube” viewpoint, where a seating area invites you to linger. These places offer different reasons to experience the trail not merely as a route, but as a way to explore the landscape and its history.

A green route is described as suitable for pushchairs in the 2023 hiking leaflet and is 6.2 kilometres long. This specific distance can help you plan your outing. Check current trail conditions before setting off.

St. Pankratius: Neo-Romanesque Architecture

The Catholic Church of St. Pankratius is a three-aisled basilica built of red sandstone. It was constructed between 1873 and 1876 in the Neo-Romanesque style. “Three-aisled” describes the layout of the church interior, with a central nave and two side aisles. Inside, arcades rest on Doric columns, complemented by decorated, flat wooden-beam ceilings and ornamental wall friezes. The Neo-Romanesque altars feature reliefs depicting scenes from the Old Testament.

St. Pankratius thus combines clearly recognisable architectural forms with richly detailed interior decoration. Red sandstone, columns, ceilings and reliefs offer different points of interest for anyone interested in architecture or religious art. St. Pankratius adds a cultural perspective on Fuhrbach to its hiking trails and border history.

Leisure Facilities on Kirchberg

Culture in the Wider Destination of Duderstadt

In the wider destination of Duderstadt, the historic old town is a cultural highlight in its own right. It is characterised by more than 600 colourful half-timbered houses from different periods. St. Servatius Church in Duderstadt was built in the Late Gothic style from around 1370 to 1520; its south portal is generally open to visitors daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Check opening times before your visit. The Creutzburg organ in Duderstadt was completed in 1735.

The Westerturm is a landmark of Duderstadt. As a former city gate, it is part of the medieval fortification system, together with the watchtowers, rampart and wall. An interactive exhibit in the tower provides more information about medieval town defences and the Duderstadt riflemen’s guild. The historic town hall houses the old council wine cellar, a torture chamber and other exhibition areas. The night watchman’s tour winds through the old town’s lanes, lit by lanterns, and includes anecdotes, stories and information about historic sights.

Duderstadt also offers various routes for active exploration. An official cycling tour runs from Duderstadt via Westerode and Mingerode to the Gut Herbigshagen Nature Experience Centre. A hiking route starts at the historic town hall, passes the Eichsfeld Borderland Museum and Gut Herbigshagen, and ends back in the old town’s historic lanes.
