Bad Harzburg: Forest, Trails and Town History
Accommodation in Bad Harzburg
Bad Harzburg combines knowledge about the forest, trails in nature and local history to offer a range of travel experiences. Local attractions provide concrete ways to explore them.
Forest Knowledge and Experiences at Height
At the HarzWaldHaus, the forest is explored in an interactive exhibition featuring information about lynxes and a formicarium. The centre is centrally located in the spa park, next to the Burgberg cable car station. The Harz treetop walkway is 1,000 metres long and rises more than 20 metres above the ground. Its stations explore topics ranging from the origins of the universe, Earth and life to the nature and culture of the Harz. The HARZ tree-top zipline takes passengers from the Burgberg through the forest towards the treetop walkway. The Burgberg cable car takes three minutes to reach the GroĂźer Burgberg. The Bad Harzburg brine spa offers a different experience: it uses natural brine from a depth of 840 metres.
Circular Hiking Trail or Historic Long-Distance Trail
The Ringwanderweg circles Bad Harzburg and starts in the spa park. It combines experiences in nature with views of the town’s districts. The Kaiserweg is a historic long-distance trail that starts in Bad Harzburg. The two trails differ in their layout: one forms a loop around the town and offers glimpses of its districts; the other is a historic long-distance trail. You can choose your hiking focus according to whether you’re looking for a loop around Bad Harzburg or the starting point of a longer trail.
Local History at the Remise and in the Badepark
The museum in the Remise is housed in the former coach house of the Harzburg Forestry Office, a listed building. It displays historical artefacts relating to the town’s history. The museum also includes the Burgberg Room, which features archaeological finds from the old Harzburg Castle. The historic Wandelhalle in Badepark offers another distinctive experience: it is regarded as a place for health and socialising. Bad Harzburg thus offers several ways to explore local history side by side—through exhibits, archaeological finds and a historic place associated with health and socialising.
Getting There and Finding Accommodation
Bad Harzburg can be reached by bus, train or car via the A369, B4 and B6. When looking for accommodation, you can plan your stay around your interests: would you like to focus on a hiking trail, a nature theme or a visit to a historic site?
Goslar in the Wider Destination
The wider destination of Goslar offers a distinct perspective through its historic old town: it has been preserved intact across an area of around one square kilometre and includes more than 1,500 half-timbered houses. Goslar’s Imperial Palace has stood at the foot of the Rammelsberg for almost 1,000 years and was once the seat of power for kings and emperors. Goslar is also home to the former Rammelsberg ore mine, now a visitor mine where you can explore various aspects of the mining tradition. An associated museum brings this history to life.
