Alfeld (Leine): Fagus Factory, City History and Nature
Accommodation in Alfeld
Alfeld (Leine) combines the UNESCO World Heritage Site Fagus Factory with Renaissance buildings, a Gothic church and a preserved medieval defensive tower. The Ortsberg cultural landscape trail and the discovery tower in Langenholzen offer their own opportunities to enjoy nature and get active. During your stay, you can choose between architecture, city history and observing nature.
Fagus Factory: modern architecture and exhibition
The Fagus Factory was built between 1910 and 1915 to plans by Walter Gropius and is regarded as a landmark work of modern architecture. On June 25, 2011, UNESCO declared the factory a World Heritage Site. Its period of construction, architectural design and World Heritage designation all come together in one place.
The exhibition covers 3,000 m² across eleven floors. It presents exhibits on the factory’s history, modern solid-wood processing and footwear fashion of the past century. If you don’t want to view architecture in isolation, you’ll also find topics related to production and fashion here. Check the current visitor regulations for the exhibition before your trip.
Renaissance, city history and medieval traces
The Latin School, built in 1610, is a Renaissance building that houses the Museum of the City of Alfeld (Leine). A permanent exhibition is devoted to the city’s history; the lower rooms host changing exhibitions.
Alfeld Town Hall has had its present appearance as a Weser Renaissance building since 1586. The Gothic hall church of St. Nicolai stands immediately next to it; it was already an archdeaconry church in 1205. Compared with the Fagus Factory, built between 1910 and 1915, the town hall and church take you back to different eras: modern architecture, the Renaissance and Gothic architecture offer different ways to explore the city’s history.
The Fillerturm is the only surviving defensive tower of Alfeld’s medieval fortifications. Inside, 88 steps lead to the viewing platform of the 22.32-meter-high tower. Access is by appointment. This sets the tower apart from the historic buildings you can view from the outside: here, climbing to the viewing platform is part of the experience.
Hiking and observing nature
The 5.5 km-long Ortsberg cultural landscape trail invites you to explore the distinctive landscape on foot. It’s a great option for anyone who wants to set aside time for a walk as well as visiting the buildings.
In Alfeld’s Langenholzen district, a former transformer tower has been converted into a discovery tower. It is a key starting point for nature observations and excursions. Access is restricted during the bird-breeding season.
There are two e-bike rental stations in Alfeld. If you’re planning to rent a bike, check availability locally.
Plan your stay around your interests
If your travel group has a range of interests, you can easily explore different themes: architecture and city history on the one hand, walks and observing nature on the other. If you’d like to include both, culture and time outdoors can add different dimensions to your trip.
