Neermoor offers a range of reasons to stay: Neermoor Mill, the history of the organ in the Evangelical Reformed Church, and Hermann-Martens Swimming Lake with its sandy beach. If you are looking for culture and time by the water, you can decide when planning your trip which should be the main focus of your stay.

Mill and pastry tradition

Neermoor Mill was built in 1884 as a three-storey gallery Dutch mill. Guided tours are offered regularly; check in advance for details of the available arrangements. The mill’s octagonal section houses a waffle iron exhibition. It focuses on the tradition of making wafer-thin pastries, the traditional New Year’s cakes and the waffle irons used to make them. It is the first and, so far, only exhibition on this subject in East Frisia. The mill’s construction, a regional pastry tradition and the baking irons associated with it are thus brought together as a cultural theme.

Church and organ history

The Evangelical Reformed Church in Neermoor was completed in 1797. Its organ was built by Hinrich Just MĂĽller of Wittmund between 1796 and 1798. Much of the original pipework has been preserved, along with the wind chest and part of the keyboard. The dates tell of different stages of construction: the church building was completed in 1797, while construction of the organ spanned the period from 1796 to 1798. The history of the instrument includes not only its builder and construction dates, but also the parts that have been preserved.

Swimming lake with sandy beach

Hermann-Martens Swimming Lake Neermoor is a public swimming lake and was the first public swimming lake in the municipality of Moormerland. Its sandy beach offers a different experience from the mill and church. On hot summer days, you can swim, cool off and relax here. Neermoor therefore offers both time by the water and cultural history as distinct possibilities.

Other routes explore historical and water-management themes. The 30 km-long Kloster Route traces the former monastic landscape of East Frisia, which in the Middle Ages included nearly 30 monasteries belonging to various orders. The 24 km-long Historische Route follows the church history of Hatshausen and Ayenwolde. The 27 km-long Siel Route explains how sluices in dykes allow inland water to drain while also withstanding the sea and storm surges.
