Weener brings together a variety of discoveries: a harbor for traditional ships, historic collections and cycling routes with clearly stated distances. This lets you balance cultural events, a walking tour and active days in different ways, without focusing your stay on just one theme.

Harbor and history

The Old Harbor in Weener is a harbor for traditional ships. Buildings more than 100 years old line the waterfront at the museum harbor. At the harbor entrance, a bronze monument commemorates the “Törfwieven,” the peat women: it honors their hard work and recalls the lively harbor activity of times gone by. These places tell the story of Weener’s harbor history in different ways.

The museums also offer their own historical highlights. The Weener Local History Museum is housed in a former poorhouse built in 1791. Its exhibits range from prehistoric finds to workshop equipment that was only abandoned a few decades ago. The Local History Museum is listed as open to visitors on Tuesdays, Saturdays and Sundays from 3 to 6 p.m. Check the latest visitor information before your visit.

The ORGANEUM is located in a villa dating from 1870 and houses a significant collection of historic keyboard instruments. Three dozen playable exhibits include house organs, organ models, harpsichords, clavichords, fortepianos and harmoniums. The collection spans a musical arc from the Renaissance to the late Romantic period. From April to September, a guided tour of the collection is offered on Wednesdays at 3 p.m.; check the dates before your trip.

Explore the old town on foot and with a guide

A walking tour of Weener’s old town passes St. George’s Church and the ORGANEUM before continuing to the Old Harbor. The Kaake Arch near St. George’s Church marked the boundary between the ecclesiastical and secular areas and is the meeting point for public town tours. These are offered on the first Saturday of each month from May to September at 3 p.m.; they start at the Kaake Arch, Norderstraße 3. As this is a seasonal offering, it’s worth checking the dates before you arrive.

Cycling routes and outdoor activities

For a longer bike ride, the 56.1-kilometer “Vom Kampf und Kunst” circular route runs from Weener via Stapelmoor into the Netherlands, then back to the starting point in Weener via Bad Nieuweschans and Bunde. Tour 4 is also 56.1 kilometers long and starts and ends in Weener. Tour 9 is shorter at 34.1 kilometers; it passes through Weener’s districts of Stapelmoor, Diele and Holthusen, and runs by the Dieler Schanzen. The distances and places named offer concrete points of reference when choosing a route. Check current route conditions before cycling. The North Sea Cycle Route also reaches the Rheiderland near Weener as it comes from the Netherlands.

If you’re looking for a walk or run, there’s a path just over five kilometers long around the Meentelande in the area near the town. It lies outside the town gates and is used for walking and running. Alongside the longer cycling routes, this provides a distinctly shorter option for outdoor activity.

More activities and finding accommodation

The 3,000-square-meter grounds of the Weener mini golf course also offer table tennis and badminton. Check whether the course is currently open before visiting. The Friesenbad has 1,200 square meters of water area and a large water slide. The pool also has a beach volleyball court, which is freely accessible to pool guests. As the Friesenbad is seasonal, check the current opening season before your trip.

If culture and activity are equally important to your travel group, the tour dates and different route lengths provide two practical starting points for planning. Look for accommodation in Weener to suit the daily rhythm you have in mind—for example, around seasonal cultural offerings, a chosen cycling tour or a visit to the pool.
