Clenze combines a distinctive hilly landscape with a tangible local history. The rolling countryside around the town, with its winding road, is known as the “Clenzer Schweiz.” Half-timbered houses shape the town center, while the church and museum offer glimpses into different periods. This lets you put landscape and culture at the heart of your trip planning.

Landscape and tours around Clenze

The Clenzer Schweiz is a landscape formed by old glacial deposits. It took shape during the penultimate major advance of the Scandinavian ice sheets, between 350,000 and 130,000 years ago. The rolling surroundings and their winding road give the landscape its name. Anyone interested in the area will find both a geological history and a strong connection to the local area.

The two tours differ in length and type. The 19.5-kilometer Clenzer-Schweiz-Weg begins in the town of Clenze. The 37-kilometer Clenzer-Schweiz-Tour is a cycling route that starts and ends in Clenze. It is not signposted. Checking the route information is useful when planning; before setting out, also check the route and conditions.

Local history in the town center and at the Blue House

A Slavic castle stood on the church hill in the town center more than a thousand years ago. Its remains were identified through excavations. St. Bartholomew’s Church was rebuilt as a Neo-Gothic hall church and consecrated in 1856. Today, half-timbered houses dating mainly from the late 18th and 19th centuries shape the streetscape.

The “Blue House” museum offers another view of the town, with a model of Clenze’s town center as it looked around 1870. Historical children’s toys and a shoemaker’s workshop are among the exhibits that give a sense of everyday life in Clenze in the 19th and 20th centuries. The museum also holds extensive sources on Clenze’s family and local history, as well as original archival documents dating from the 17th century to the present day. School classes can experience a sample lesson in a fully equipped classroom from more than a hundred years ago.

More destinations in the wider LĂĽchow-Dannenberg travel region

Beyond Clenze, the wider Lüchow-Dannenberg travel region offers its own cultural attractions. In the Rundling village of Lübeln, the Rundlingsmuseum Wendland presents a farmstead as an open-air museum. Traditional crafts are brought to life there in the pottery, forge, bakehouse and wheelwright’s workshop. This offers a different way to explore history from the streetscapes and exhibits at the Blue House.

The wider Lüchow-Dannenberg travel region is also home to the Archaeological Center Hitzacker. The open-air museum is on a site that people were already using around 4,000 years ago. Three reconstructed longhouses and numerous hands-on activity stations explore the everyday lives of people in the past. If you’re looking for accommodation, you can first consider which places and themes matter most to your trip, then choose your base accordingly.
