Betzendorf combines a viewpoint on Betzendorfer Berg with a centuries-old fieldstone church and a cycling route connecting the village with Amelinghausen. The landscape, local history and opportunities to get active offer distinct ways to shape your stay.

Views from Betzendorfer Berg

Betzendorfer Berg lies in the highest part of the district of Lüneburg, on the southeastern edge of the nature park. From here, you can look south across Süsing, considered one of the largest continuous woodland areas in northern Germany. To the northwest, you can see Betzendorf and its medieval fieldstone church. On a clear day, you can also see the church towers of Lüneburg and the banks of the Elbe. The different views connect the forest to the south with the village landscape and far-reaching vistas.

The viewpoint is at a road junction at the end of Rackerstraße in Betzendorf. Parking is available by the church on Im Dorfe.

A fieldstone church with several building phases

St. Peter and Paul Church has shaped the village landscape for centuries and is considered a notable example of medieval religious architecture in the Lüneburg Heath. The origins of the nave date back to the 13th century; the round tower dates to 1190. There is also a free-standing wooden bell tower, a design considered characteristic of the region.

The nave, round tower and separate bell tower draw attention to different aspects of the church’s architectural history. Anyone interested in historic architecture will find not only a distinctive feature of the village landscape, but also clearly distinguishable building elements, each with its own form and date.

Cycle the Schafstall Loop

The 21-kilometre Schafstall Loop is a cycling route between Amelinghausen and Betzendorf. It combines rural roads, historic buildings and wide views across the Amelinghausen region. The route recommends stopping at the historic sheepfold in Betzendorf. Pay attention to the route when planning: the loop is not signposted. Bring a map or use digital navigation, and check the route information before setting off.

More destinations in the wider Lüneburg travel destination

The wider Lüneburg travel destination also includes other distinct places with different themes. The Findlingsring near Breetze, in the Bleckede district, features erratic boulders as evidence of the Ice Age formation of the Elbe glacial valley. The ring is freely accessible and parking is available; check current access information before your visit. In the Schieringer Forest between Barskamp and Walmsburg are megalithic tombs built during the Neolithic period, between 3000 and 2300 BC. A circular hiking trail leads from Walmsburg village square to the tombs. Here, geological traces of the Ice Age meet human-built structures from a later period.

Different types of activities also call for different distances: Lopausee lake and Lopaupark in Amelinghausen have a 2.2-kilometre circular trail for jogging, walking and Nordic walking. The Königinnen-Weg is an 11-kilometre circular hiking trail around the heathland town of Amelinghausen. The two routes differ mainly in length and in whether you want to include a loop around Lopausee lake or a longer hike around Amelinghausen in your plans.

Technology and natural history offer further contrasts in the Lüneburg travel destination. The Lüneburg Ship Lift in Scharnebeck is the largest ship lift of its kind in Germany. The Biosphaerium Elbtalaue in Bleckede combines an aquarium landscape, live beavers and more than 1,000 square metres of modern exhibition space. These destinations complement Betzendorf’s landscape and church attractions with other distinct themes in the wider travel destination.
