Discover Leese: Lakes, walking trail and history
Accommodation in Leese
In Leese, nature and local history sit side by side: the Leeser Runde trail passes through varied landscapes, while archaeological finds and historic sites offer glimpses into the past. You can tailor your stay to whether you’d rather spend most of your time outdoors or explore the region’s history.
Lakes and the Leeser Runde
The Leeser Runde is a marked hiking trail around the municipality of Leese in the Mittelweser collective municipality. Along the route, hikers experience the lakes west of Leese. There is a viewing platform by the lakes, with views of the water and many waterbirds. East of Leese, the trail passes through woodland and meadows on its way back to the starting point. The contrast between views of the lakes and the woodland and meadows gives the route a variety of landscapes.
You can also factor travel into your plans: the Leeser Runde is accessible by train on the Nienburg–Minden line, via Leese-Stolzenau station. Check the current timetable before setting off. If you are interested in birdwatching and landscapes, you can make the viewing platform a destination in its own right; the circular trail also offers views of the woodland and meadows to the east.
History at specific sites
At Kleines Feld in Leese lies the largest known pre-Roman Iron Age cemetery in northern Germany, with around 1,100 individual graves. Its approximate size and importance beyond the region make it a special point of reference for the area’s early history. The church in Leese is home to different historical objects: an old crucifix known as the “Leeser Kreuz” (Leese Cross). There is also an 800-year-old Romanesque sandstone baptismal font, decorated with leaf motifs. The name, age and material give each of these objects its own historical character.
The lives of Jewish families are also part of Leese’s history. Jewish families lived in Leese from the early 18th century until the Nazi era; by the late 18th century at the latest, they had their own cemetery on Zappenberg. The Zappenberg Jewish Cemetery is outside the village, near the railway embankment on Zappenberg road. Those exploring local history will find another distinct historical trace here.
The Leese local history museum is another option for a visit focused on local history. It opens once a month from April to October, from 14:00 to 17:00, to all visitors. You can explore the museum and learn more about local history. As it opens monthly during this period, check the current opening date before your visit.
More to explore in the Nienburg destination
The Nienburg destination also offers a range of cultural and nature-related attractions. The Nienburg Museum traces the development of the Mittelweser region, from the arrival of the first people to the present day, across three historic buildings. Its main building is the Fresenhof, a 16th-century manor once belonging to a castle retainer. The museum also includes the Asparagus Museum, the Biedermeier Garden and a lapidarium; the neoclassical villa offers a deeper insight into the 19th century.
In Estorf, the historic barn quarter of Im SchĂĽnebusch preserves nine traditional barns. They house a local history museum with exhibits on agricultural equipment, rural home life, a bakery and village history. Groups can book an overnight stay in the rustic Radler-Scheune in advance. For young children, Dinosaur Park MĂĽnchehagen offers hands-on activities, including excavating a 25-metre-long skeleton. More than 300 dinosaur footprints can also be seen there, dating back around 140 million years. Another active option is the 23.6-kilometre circular tour on the Weser Cycle Route between Landesbergen and Stolzenau; check route conditions before setting off.
Plan your stay around your interests
If your main interests are the Leeser Runde, the lakes and Leese’s history, focus your search on Leese.
