Nienburg (Weser): Bear Trail, Museums and Wesavi
Accommodation in Nienburg
Discover Nienburg (Weser) by following a variety of different trails: white bear paw prints lead through the old town, museums tell the story of police and regional history, and Wesavi offers a different kind of experience with its saunas. This lets you tailor your mix of city exploring, culture and relaxation to the interests of your travel group.
Trails through the old town
The Nienburg Bear Trail is a 3.3-kilometre circular route through the old town. 500 large white bear paw prints mark the way on the street paving and are renewed every year. The route passes 32 sights, including the town hall, St. Martin’s Parish Church, the Fresenhof and Posthof, and the Quaet-Faslem-Haus with its asparagus museum. The police museum and several Nienburg monuments are also along the route. Information boards describe the sights in more detail and provide additional context for each stop.
The townscape is also a subject in its own right beyond the Bear Trail: half-timbered façades, Weser Renaissance façades and brickwork shape the old town. The old town is part of Nienburg, a historic town with a 1,000-year history. The weekly market is held in the town centre on Wednesday and Saturday mornings; it is described as “Europe’s most beautiful weekly market.” Depending on the day of your visit, a walk through town can therefore be combined with a regularly held market.
Museums with different perspectives
The Lower Saxony Police Museum is permanently located at Lange Straße 20–22 in Nienburg city centre. It presents knowledge and facts about criminal identification procedures, police photography and the work of the criminal investigation department in an engaging way. Another main focus offers insights into the various modes of transport used by the Lower Saxony police since the Second World War. Its topics therefore range from criminal investigation to the history of police transport.
The Nienburg Museum presents regional history in Nienburg’s oldest half-timbered building. Its permanent exhibition covers the history of the town and the Nienburg/Weser district, with a major focus on archaeology. This includes the Nienburg culture and finds from the early medieval burial ground at Liebenau. Those especially interested in the region’s past will therefore find a different perspective here than at the police museum: archaeological evidence and the history of the town and district, rather than police work and its modes of transport.
City tour, nature themes and sauna
The Nienburg Climate Tour connects nature conservation areas, a wind turbine, a near-natural display and educational garden, and a farm shop within the town. Its stops cover a range of topics, from nature conservation and renewable energy to gardening and regional shopping. The tour can offer a different perspective on Nienburg than the old town walk, without the two routes sharing the same focus.
If you would like to include a sauna visit in your stay, Wesavi is a sauna and swimming complex in the heart of Nienburg. Its outdoor area includes a garden sauna at 70°C and, as a special highlight, a Weser sauna at 90°C with panoramic views of the Weser marshes. The two temperatures and the view offer specific differences to help you decide whether this experience appeals to you.
In the wider destination of Nienburg
The Nienburg Museum also offers several historical perspectives in the wider destination of Nienburg: across three historic buildings, it traces the development of the Middle Weser region from the arrival of the first people to the present day. The museum includes the asparagus museum, the Biedermeier Garden and a lapidarium; the neoclassical villa provides deeper insights into the 19th century. The Fresenhof, a 16th-century manor house, is the museum’s main building.
Other stops highlight different aspects of architectural and cultural history. Schinna Monastery, in the Schinna district of the municipality of Stolzenau, is a listed building of regional significance; Loccum Monastery is a religious house built in 1163. In Bücken, the collegiate church of St. Maternian et St. Nicolai contains important art treasures, including a rood cross dating from 1230 and richly illustrated stained-glass windows from the 13th century. In Estorf, the historic barn quarter of Im Schünebusch preserves nine traditional barns. A local history museum there displays agricultural equipment, traditional rural home furnishings, a bakehouse and village history. Groups can spend the night in a rustic cyclist’s barn by arrangement in advance. The Hochzeitsmühle, a wedding mill built in 1872 in Landesbergen, houses a small exhibition on local history.
For families looking for activities for young children, Dinosaur Park MĂĽnchehagen offers hands-on activities, including the excavation of a 25-metre-long skeleton. More than 300 dinosaur footprints bear witness to a time around 140 million years ago. Another way to experience the region is to take one of the round trips, experience cruises or charter trips offered by Flotte Mittelweser on the Weser and Aller rivers, departing from Nienburg or Verden. The operator provides specific departure times separately. If you prefer to travel by bike, you can include the 23.6-kilometre circular route on the Weser Cycle Route between Landesbergen and Stolzenau in your plans; check the route conditions before setting off.
When choosing accommodation, you can start with your preferred focus: Nienburg’s old town, museums, weekly market and Wesavi make for a city-focused stay; other museums, historic places, the cycle route, boat trips and Dinosaur Park add to the options in the wider destination of Nienburg. Which of these interests will shape your trip can help you decide which destinations to include in your plans.
