The Steimbke lake gives walks a clear destination: various paths lead around the lake. There is also a toboggan hill there. If you would like to explore the surrounding area on foot, you will also find marked hiking trails in the Samtgemeinde Steimbke, with different lengths and landscape themes.

Walking Paths and Hiking Routes

A tourism brochure dated March 2021 lists three marked hiking trails in the Samtgemeinde Steimbke. The approximately 9.5-kilometre Krähentour route passes through the Krähe forest. The approximately 9.2-kilometre Blinder-See-Tour leads through moorland and heathland north of Steimbke. The approximately 5.8-kilometre Grinderwaldtour route is themed around “Traces of the Past and Modern Times.”

Of these three routes, the Grinderwaldtour is the shortest; the Krähentour and Blinder-See-Tour are longer, at approximately 9.5 and 9.2 kilometres respectively. The landscapes also differ between the two longer routes: the Krähe forest on one, and moorland and heathland on the other. Their names and themes therefore give you an initial guide when choosing a hike. Check local conditions before setting out.

Culture in the wider Nienburg destination

In the wider Nienburg destination, culture offers a different focus. Nienburg’s old town combines half-timbered façades, Weser Renaissance façades and brickwork; the town has a 1,000-year history. The Nienburg Museum traces the development of the Central Weser region, from the presence of the first people to the present day, across three historic buildings. Its main building is the Fresenhof, a castle estate dating from the 16th century. The museum also includes the Asparagus Museum, the Biedermeier Garden and a lapidarium. A Neoclassical villa offers deeper insights into the 19th century.

The wider Nienburg destination is also home to the historic barn quarter Im Schünebusch in Estorf, which preserves nine traditional barns. A local history museum there focuses on agricultural tools, rural domestic culture, a bakery and village history. By prior arrangement, a cyclists’ barn offers groups a rustic place to spend the night. In Landesbergen, the Wedding Mill, built in 1872, houses a small exhibition on local history. Schinna Monastery is a monument of significance beyond the region; Loccum Monastery was built in 1163. Among the artistic treasures in the collegiate church of St. Maternian et St. Nicolai in Bücken are a triumphal cross dating from 1230 and richly illustrated stained-glass windows from the 13th century.

More ideas for planning your trip

The wider Nienburg destination also offers options for active days. A 23.6-kilometre circular route on the Weser Cycle Route runs between Landesbergen and Stolzenau. Flotte Mittelweser offers circular, experience and charter cruises on the Weser and Aller, departing from Nienburg or Verden. If you plan a trip, check the operator’s timetable.

For families with young children, the Dinosaur Park MĂĽnchehagen in Rehburg-Loccum offers a distinct theme within the wider Nienburg destination. More than 300 dinosaur footprints can be seen there, bearing witness to a time around 140 million years ago. Activities for young children include excavating a 25-metre-long skeleton.

The different landscapes, route lengths and themes can help you organise your interests for your stay.
