Zorge between Half-Timbered Houses, River and Industrial History
Accommodation in Zorge
Zorge combines well-maintained half-timbered houses with a setting on the River Zorge in the heart of Harz Nature Park, as well as a distinctive industrial history. It is also home to a listed bell tower, a hiking trail to a waterfall and a spirits distillery. This lets you explore local history, scenery and production as different themes for your trip.
Industrial History and the Townscape
A notable chapter in Zorge’s industrial history is the production, in 1842, of the first steam locomotive for the state railway of the Duchy of Brunswick-Lüneburg. It is therefore considered the first locomotive manufactured in Germany. Visitors can see a full-size model and a Normag tractor produced in Zorge. These two technical exhibits provide tangible points of reference for the town’s history.
The Zorge local history museum offers further insights into the town’s past. The building that has housed it since 1988 was built in 1681 by Chief Forestry Commissioner Zacharias Koch and served as a forestry office until 1938. The museum features more than 2,500 noteworthy exhibits; its collection includes objects from everyday life in a mining village over several centuries. The building’s history and the collection thus offer different perspectives on the town.
The townscape also has stories to tell: the Protestant St Bartholomew’s Church has been a landmark since 1853. Above Zorge stands the freestanding yellow bell tower, a listed landmark of the town. It has been part of the Braunschweigischer Kulturbesitz Foundation since 1934. Together with the many well-maintained half-timbered houses, the church, tower and houses add distinct features to the townscape.
River, Hiking Trail and Viewpoint
The River Zorge and the town’s setting in the heart of Harz Nature Park are part of Zorge’s landscape. At the edge of town, a hiking trail leads to the waterfall at Neuer Teich. Another named destination is “Pferdchen,” a viewpoint at an elevation of about 430 metres above the South Harz municipality of Zorge. For your trip planning, you can consider a trail leading to a specific waterfall and a viewpoint as separate nature-focused options.
Spirits from the Hammerschmiede Distillery
The Hammerschmiede distillery produces fine spirits. Hercynian Distilling Co. / Hammerschmiede has been making spirits since 1985. Visitor options include a shop and guided tours of the production facilities. This adds a distinct focus on spirits production to the town’s industrial and local history.
