Balje lies in the wider Kehdingen region between the Oste and Elbe rivers, along maritime section A of the Elbe Cycle Route. Dikes, marsh meadows, fields and orchards shape the town and its surroundings; the area is also known for birdwatching, the Natureum Niederelbe and striking buildings. When planning your trip, you can first decide whether to focus your days on nature and coastal scenery or on local history.

Dikes, Marshland and Birdlife

The Elbe dike shapes the landscape around Balje. The Hörner Außendeich lies at the mouth of the Oste; the Baljer Außendeich is another named dike section. Fields, marsh meadows and orchards cover a large part of Balje. In the wider Kehdingen region, marshland and moorland define the landscape, parts of which lie below sea level.

Nature watching is also part of the region’s character. The Natureum park has birdwatching stations. Thousands of migratory birds gather nearby in spring and autumn. North of the Natureum, near the Balje lighthouse, there is a protected area where tens of thousands of migratory birds stop over in autumn. This offers bird enthusiasts different seasonal opportunities: observations near the Natureum are described for spring and autumn, while stopovers in the protected area take place in autumn.

The Natureum Niederelbe at the Mouth of the Oste

The Natureum Niederelbe was established in 1990 in Balje, at the mouth of the Oste, as a natural history museum. It developed from a natural history museum with a birdwatching station into an adventure park. The site is on an artificial peninsula in a nature reserve. Its complex includes the Coastal Museum, the Coastal Zoo and the Elbe Coastal Park near the mouth of the Elbe.

The exhibitions explore a range of landscapes and topics: marshland, moorland, geest and tidal flats, as well as global trade, storm surges and coastal protection. Nature and coastal issues are presented alongside topics ranging from broader economic connections to protecting the coast. Depending on your interests, you can focus your visit on the landscape, wildlife or coastal history.

Buildings and the History of Balje

St. Marien Church was built in 1938 as a brick church. It stands on the site of a medieval church first mentioned in the early 14th century. In Hörne, Op de Horn is a medieval-style village estate with eight buildings and a historic garden.

Balje’s two lighthouses also tell of different periods of construction. The old lighthouse was built in 1903 and commissioned on 1 February 1904. It is 16 metres tall and offers wide-ranging views over the mouth of the Elbe. The modern Balje leading light was commissioned in 1980 and is 56.2 metres tall.

Balje is a municipality in the district of Stade in Lower Saxony. Its history is linked to the former Prince-Archbishopric of Bremen and the later Duchy of Bremen; in 1823, the area became part of the Stade region. This local and regional history adds a cultural perspective to Balje’s landscape experiences.

Getting Around and Planning the Right Trip
