Suhlendorf is an idyllic holiday destination in the eastern Lüneburg Heath, near the Elbhöhen-Wendland Nature Park. Located right on federal highway B71, the village combines its natural setting with a distinctive cultural and historical attraction: the “Auguste” post mill at the craft museum. If you are looking for accommodation for a stay, this combination offers a clear starting point for deciding whether you are most interested in the heathland or the history of craftsmanship.

The “Auguste” Post Mill and Craft Museum

The “Auguste” post mill was built near Braunschweig in 1810. In the early 1970s, it was dismantled into individual parts; it was extensively restored in Suhlendorf and rebuilt as the centrepiece of a mill museum. The mill is over 200 years old. Its history links its original location near Braunschweig with its reconstruction and role as a museum in Suhlendorf.

Guided tours of the Suhlendorf craft museum are available on request and by prior arrangement. A demonstration of the “Auguste” post mill in operation can also be arranged. If you are interested in this kind of insight into the mill, it is best to plan ahead and make arrangements in advance. Many museum events bring traditional crafts to life and make them an experience for the senses. Alongside the history of the mill, the practical presentation of craftsmanship is therefore a central focus.

The open-air grounds include another point of interest: a path leads through the bee fence to a children’s playground. For a visit with children, this connects the museum theme with a walk around the outdoor grounds. The path, bee fence and playground are specific stops described as part of the museum grounds.

Suhlendorf as a place to stay

When choosing accommodation in Suhlendorf, you can take the local attractions as your guide: its location in the eastern Lüneburg Heath, its proximity to the Elbhöhen-Wendland Nature Park, and the craft museum with its post mill. Its direct location on B71 provides a specific point of reference for getting there. This makes it easier to decide whether Suhlendorf’s combination of natural scenery and craft history suits your stay.

If you look beyond Suhlendorf, you can also consider the wider destination of Uelzen. Other cultural and landscape attractions there complement Suhlendorf’s main focus. The Hundertwasser railway station in Uelzen was created as a project for Expo 2000 in Hanover. It is one of the last works by Austrian architect Friedensreich Hundertwasser and brings together art, ecology and modernity. The “Path of Stones” leads from the station forecourt into Uelzen town centre; it comprises 21 artistically painted rock sculptures. The Gothic St. Mary’s Church in Uelzen was consecrated and elevated to parish church status in 1292. Its church tower is 86 metres high.

The Ebstorf World Map at Ebstorf Abbey is another cultural and historical attraction in the wider Uelzen destination. It was probably created around 1300, covers approximately 13 m² and is considered the largest known medieval depiction of the world. The Ellerndorf juniper heath offers a different experience: it lies between Eimke and Ebstorf in the district of Uelzen, covers almost 60 hectares and is the largest contiguous heathland area in the eastern Lüneburg Heath. In the Uelzen destination, medieval history, art in the urban landscape and heathland sit alongside Suhlendorf’s focus on craftsmanship.
