Esens: Museums, History and Urban Culture
Accommodation in Esens
Esens is a great destination for a trip where city history and culture come to life: a former community center, historic exhibits and a church tower offering views across the rooftops provide very different ways to explore the city. There are also works of art in public spaces and recurring events. When choosing accommodation, it helps to first consider whether you want to focus on museums and architecture, a guided tour or an event.
Museums tell stories of everyday life and history
The August Gottschalk House Jewish Museum is located in Esens in the former community center of the Jewish community, built in 1899. Its permanent exhibition covers Jewish life in East Frisia up to the dissolution of the Jewish communities in 1940. Its main themes include everyday life, religious life and Jewish holidays, as well as persecution and extermination. The renovated mikveh is the original ritual bath of the Jewish community in Esens, preserved in its original condition, and is also open to visitors.
The Leben am Meer Museum focuses on the settlement history of the Harlingerland region and the history of the town of Esens. An old watchmaker’s workshop and a tiled room offer insights into the craft and everyday culture of the 19th and 20th centuries. This brings regional settlement history together with tangible glimpses into working and living conditions in the past.
Church, tower and special views
Opened in 1982, the Tower Museum is located in the tower of St. Magnus Church. A climb of 113 steps leads to the sound openings, from where you can see across the rooftops of Esens as far as the coast. The museum displays a church clock mechanism from 1873. It is also possible to look inside the Rohlfs church organ, built in 1860.
The church itself also features architectural details: St. Magnus Church is 57 meters long and laid out as a three-aisled hall church in the shape of a cross, with a choir and eastern apse. Its interior, designed in the Gothic Revival style, seats 1,500. Its dimensions, cruciform floor plan and views from the tower offer different perspectives on the building—from the church interior to the rooftops of the town.
Art and city history on a walking tour
Esens’s 52 Buddy Bears are among the town’s attractions and popular photo spots for visitors and locals alike. The sculpture trail features seven works of art and adds public art to a walk around town. The Esens Bear Flyer can serve as a guide to get started; it is available to download and at the tourist information office.
A guided city tour takes you across the market square, through the pedestrian zone and along the former ramparts. Along the way, you’ll learn about the town’s past and present. If you prefer to explore independently, you can use the flyer to find your way; those interested in the town’s development can learn more about historical and current topics on the guided tour.
Bus route K1 is another useful planning reference: in just a few minutes, you can reach the “Krankenhaus” stop, opposite the Leben am Meer Museum. Bus routes and stops can change, so check the latest timetable before you travel.
Events throughout the year
The Esens Variety Festival is an annual tradition in Esens’s old town. The program includes street theater, variety acts, acrobatics, clowning and music; individual program details may change. Another recurring event takes place on the last Friday in October: Esens hosts an event featuring pumpkins, costumes and spooky characters, family activities and performances in the market square. If the festival or this October event is important to your trip, check the dates and programs in advance.
When looking for accommodation in Esens, your planned activities can help you decide: would you like to focus on museums and church architecture, take a walking tour of the town or plan your trip around an event? This question can help you plan your stay around your interests without having to set a fixed itinerary for every day.
