Mützenich combines a distinctive high point with hiking and cycling routes, as well as insights into local history. Steling in Monschau-Mützenich is 658 meters above sea level and is the highest elevation in the Aachen City Region. It also has a special role on the Eifelsteig long-distance hiking trail: it is the highest point on the trail’s second stage. From the “Im Brand” hiking car park, follow the “Steling” signs to Steling. This gives you a clearly named destination and signposted directions to start planning your hike.

Hiking between Steling and Mützenicher Venn

The 11.4-kilometer circular hiking trail 36 starts at the village square in Mützenich. It follows part of the Eifelsteig, runs along the edge of Mützenicher Venn, and includes a picnic area at the former German-Belgian customs station. The details about the starting point, length and route give you several specific points of reference when planning a hike. Near Mützenich, hiking route 36 also passes close to Reichenstein Monastery, a 12th-century building, and then reaches the Vennbahn, a cycling route.

The Vennbahn-Rur Route offers a different perspective: this cycling tour between Monschau and Sourbrodt passes through Mützenich. If you plan your outings by mode of transport, you can choose between hiking trails connected with the Eifelsteig and a described cycling tour. At Steling, the signs from the “Im Brand” hiking car park provide a specific point of reference. Route 36, in turn, is described as an 11.4-kilometer circular trail starting at the village square.

Rocks, picnic area and village history

Kaiser Karls Bettstatt is a rock near Mützenich, right on the German-Belgian border. Today, this spot in the High Fens is especially popular with hikers as a picnic area. There is a small shelter and several places to sit around the rock. This makes it not only a distinctive landmark on the border, but also a specific place to stop for a break outdoors.

The “Uraalt Scholl” village museum is housed in a former school building in Mützenich. Visits are possible by appointment. On display are rustic rooms with antique furniture and stuffed animals, as well as numerous agricultural implements. The exhibits therefore range from furnished rooms to objects from farming. If you plan to visit the museum, arrange your visit in advance. St. Bartholomew’s Church is also one of the named records of local history: it was consecrated in 1850.

Culture in the wider destination of Monschau

In the wider destination of Monschau, you can explore the old town on your own by following circular trail 15. Other cultural attractions focus on different things than the hiking trails around Mützenich: the Red House was built in 1760 by textile manufacturer Johann Heinrich Scheibler as a residential and business building. The Red House, the half-timbered façades along the Rur and the castle are landmarks of the town of Monschau. At the Monschau glassworks, visitors can watch glassblowers shape vessels or glass figures from molten glass. This lets you plan your trip around whether you want to focus mainly on trails and scenery, or also on town history and craftsmanship.

When looking for accommodation, your choice of interests can provide a first point of reference: consider whether your trip will focus more on hiking, a cycling tour or cultural stops. The specific attractions in Mützenich and the wider destination of Monschau offer different starting points, without requiring you to combine them into a single route.
