Bonn between history, museums and the Rheinaue
Accommodation in Bonn
Bonn brings together city history, museums and nature: its picturesque old town has an extensive pedestrian zone, around 30 museums and numerous sporting and music events. The city lies directly on the Rhine and is surrounded by appealing countryside. You can therefore choose different focuses for your trip—from contemporary history and exhibitions to paths and water in Rheinaue Leisure Park.
Experience Bonn’s history of democracy
The signposted Path of Democracy leads to contemporary historical sites in the former government district. It begins at the House of the History of the Federal Republic of Germany. The walking tour is estimated to take around 90 to 120 minutes; it passes twelve of the 18 stops, while six are a little farther away. The estimated duration and number of stops give you a clear guide if you want to include this tour in your day’s plans.
The history of democracy is also at the heart of the House of History. The permanent exhibition shows how Germany has developed into a stable democracy since 1945—in a personal, everyday and interactive way. A museum visit therefore complements the tour stops with an exhibition that explores the subject from its own perspective.
Discover museums and new technology
Bonn’s Museum Mile includes Museum Koenig, the House of History, the Caricature Gallery, the Bonn Museum of Art, the Art and Exhibition Hall of the Federal Republic of Germany, and the Deutsches Museum Bonn. The Museum Mile is accessible by public transport. If you are interested in several museums, you will find a range of subjects here under one shared name—from history and art to nature and technology.
At the Deutsches Museum Bonn, you can learn the basics of artificial intelligence and train simple neural networks in the “AI: Foundations” experience space. The museum also offers interactive “AI:ckstarts,” each lasting 30 minutes, which provide an accessible introduction to the world of artificial intelligence. The “Touch Tomorrow Lab” offers insights into the digital world of tomorrow and regularly runs guided discovery tours for small groups. As available times may change, check the schedule for the “AI:ckstarts” and Lab tours before your visit.
The Rheinaue: paths, a lake and open space
Rheinaue Leisure Park covers 160 hectares and lies in the geographical heart of Bonn. A network of nearly 45 kilometres of walking paths runs through the grounds. The park is home to the 15-hectare Auensee lake, where six pontoon bridges invite you to go boating. The Rheinaue offers a different way to experience Bonn from its museums and contemporary historical sites: here, the focus is on the spacious park, its paths and the water.
The figures help put the park’s character into perspective: the Rheinaue spans a large area, while Auensee lake is a distinct, clearly defined feature within it. You can therefore focus your visit more on walks through the parkland or on boating on the lake, without having to plan both as the same outing.
Walking routes with different focuses
Alongside the Path of Democracy, there is the Museum Route, an approximately 12-kilometre circular route with a journey time of about one hour. It starts and ends at the Market Square. The comparison highlights the different ways to plan your visit: the Path of Democracy passes contemporary historical sites and is estimated to take around 90 to 120 minutes; the Museum Route is described as a circular route with an approximate journey time of one hour. Depending on your interests, choose whether to follow the contemporary historical trail or include the Museum Route in your trip.
Choose the right focus for your trip
Would you like to discover Bonn mainly through its history and exhibitions, or are the Rheinaue, the lake and its paths more your focus? The old town, with its pedestrian zone, and the range of sporting and music events also offer different starting points for planning. You can use this focus to guide your search for places to stay during your time in Bonn.
