Bottrop brings together slag heaps, outdoor art, nature and a wide range of leisure activities. At Halde Haniel, the Stations of the Cross, an art installation and an amphitheatre come together; the Tetrahedron adds a striking landmark atop a former mining spoil heap. Other highlights include the sculpture park at the Quadrat Museum Centre, Movie Park Germany and the circular hiking trails around Heidhofsee. This gives you different ways to shape your trip and consider which experiences matter most when choosing your accommodation.

Slag heaps with distinctive features

The Tetrahedron is a structure around 50 metres tall, built on a former mining spoil heap. Its tip is illuminated at night, and it is known as a landmark visible from far away. The summit of the roughly 80-metre-high heap, where the Tetrahedron stands, can be reached on foot via a winding path or a staircase with almost 400 steps. The two measurements refer to different things: around 50 metres for the structure and roughly 80 metres for the heap.

At Halde Haniel, a Stations of the Cross route with 15 stations leads to the summit; the cross was erected in 1992. Another striking work is Agustín Ibarrola’s installation: one hundred painted railway sleepers are arranged on the hill like totems. There is also a special venue for cultural events: the amphitheatre on Halde Haniel is situated at an altitude of 126 metres and can accommodate 800 visitors. The Stations of the Cross, the art installation and the event venue each give this excursion destination its own character.

Art and greenery at the Quadrat Museum Centre

The sculpture park at the Quadrat Museum Centre features permanent exhibitions. Around the Josef Albers Museum, you can discover works by Max Bill, Donald Judd, Norbert Kricke, Hans Steinbrenner, Bernar Venet and other artists. The city park, a local recreation area, is right next to the museum centre, and the city centre is within walking distance. This makes it easy to combine time in green surroundings with outdoor art and a trip into the city centre.

Leisure activities for different interests

In the north of Bottrop, Movie Park Germany covers more than 45 hectares. Its themed areas offer attractions for visitors of different ages. Younger children can enjoy 14 attractions in Nickland. These details provide a practical guide when planning a trip for different age groups, since not every attraction has the same focus.

The Alpincenter Bottrop adds to the choice with a 640-metre-long indoor ski slope, described as the longest in the world. The facilities also include a high-ropes course and a summer toboggan run. Movie Park and Alpincenter therefore offer different types of leisure activities: themed attractions at one, and a ski slope and other activities at the other.

Circular trails, a lake and outdoor activities

Heidhofsee is one of Bottrop’s local recreation areas and has circular hiking trails. There are play and sunbathing lawns on the south shore; the lake can be accessed via “Zum Heidhof”. In the Kirchheller Heide, hiking, cycling and horse riding offer other ways to get active. This gives you a clear choice between the trails and time at Heidhofsee and the three activities in the Kirchheller Heide.

Which accommodation suits you best therefore depends primarily on what you want your stay to focus on: art and the city park, slag heaps, leisure activities or nature.
