Coesfeld reveals itself through its history, culture and routes into the surrounding area. The WalkenbrĂĽckentor preserves a remnant of the fortifications dating from the 14th century; today, the castle park is a place for relaxation, cultural events and Sport im Park activities.

Explore the city’s history on your own or with a guide

The Walkenbrückentor is a surviving remnant of Coesfeld’s 14th-century town fortifications. The building houses the city museum “DAS TOR”, which brings Coesfeld’s past to life. Coesfeld offers self-guided tours that do not require booking; accompanying materials can be downloaded free of charge. A bookable night watchman’s tour takes you through winding streets and explores the city’s history. This lets you choose between exploring independently and joining a guided tour.

Opened in 2025, the Citadellenweg is a circular route around and across the grounds of the former Ludgerusburg fortress and includes 14 stops. It adds a historical dimension to the city’s themes with a route that takes in the former fortress grounds.

Cultural venues with a history of their own

The BischofsmĂĽhle is a fully operational museum mill, equipped as it would have been around 1900. The former synagogue is used for cultural events and exhibitions and is one of the few surviving buildings of its kind in Westphalia. Here, different ways of experiencing culture come together: a museum mill, a historic building now used for cultural events, and the city museum in the WalkenbrĂĽckentor.

Since the end of 2022, the Natz-Thier-Haus has been used as a memorial site. The Kunst- und Kulturwerkstatt Natz-Thier and the Fair Gehandelt Laden engage with Natz Thier’s work there through art. Check current access arrangements before visiting. The Kunstverein Münsterland is based in Coesfeld city centre, where visitors can find more than 230 square metres of exhibition space.

Castle park and the Berkel

The castle park, also known as Liebfrauenpark, opened to the public in 1980. Today, it serves as a meeting place and recreational space in central Coesfeld; it also hosts cultural events and Sport im Park activities. The Berkel flows through Coesfeld’s castle park; a redesign has made it a river that visitors can experience up close once again. The park thus connects a historic site with its present-day role as a public meeting place and recreational space.
