Discover Brilon: Traditions, Old Town and Geology
Accommodation in Brilon
Brilon combines a long-standing festival tradition with an Old Town where the town hall, market square and half-timbered ensemble offer tangible points of reference for exploring the town’s history. There are also geological themed trails and routes of varying lengths. You can shape your trip around your own interests, choosing between local traditions, architectural heritage and the landscape.
Brilon’s Traditions and Historic Architecture
The Brilon Schnade procession is one of Westphalia’s largest and most distinctive folk festivals and is a central expression of Brilon’s customs and traditions. Its history spans more than 620 years; the Schnade procession has been documented as a boundary walk since 1388. The festival thus combines a long history with a firmly rooted local tradition.
Brilon’s Old Town also preserves well-maintained architecture from earlier centuries. Built around 1250, the town hall has a Baroque façade and is considered one of the oldest town halls in Germany. A half-timbered ensemble forms part of the streetscape around the market square. Alongside walks through the countryside, these historic landmarks give a stay in Brilon a distinct urban dimension.
Haus Hövener and the Town’s History
The Haus Hövener town museum is in the centre of Brilon, directly on the market square, and has largely been preserved in its 1910 condition. An interactive town model offers insights into life in Brilon in past centuries. Haus Hövener also displays original bones of an Iguanodon, discovered in 1978 in a quarry near Brilon-Nehden. Here, the town’s history and a prehistoric find come together under one roof, without reducing these two themes to the same chapter in Brilon’s history.
You can book themed guided tours of the town through the Haus Hövener town museum; check availability before your trip. The imposing west tower of the Provost Church of St Peter and Andrew is considered a landmark of Brilon. Tower climbs are listed as a seasonal offering from May to October. Please check whether they are currently available before visiting.
Geology and Views on the Geological Fault Trail
The approximately 8-kilometre Brilon Geological Fault Trail combines geological transitions with panoramic views. It brings two distinct geological features from the Devonian period to life: the limestone hills of the Brilon Plateau and the diabase deposits of Bilstein. This themed trail is about more than the views; it also showcases the transition between different rock formations. One highlight is the viewing platform on the 634-metre-high Bilstein spoil heap.
Trails with Different Focuses
Both the certified Rothaarsteig and the certified Briloner Kammweg start at Brilon’s market square. A specific section of the Rothaarsteig can be identified: the route from Brilon to Bruchhausen is 17.02 kilometres long and passes through Olsberg. Their shared starting point can help you choose a trail; the stated distance applies to this section of the Rothaarsteig. The section from the Kyrill Gate in Brilon’s municipal forest to the Fire Oak is part of the Briloner Kammweg and the Rothaarsteig.
The DinoSpuren circular trail in Brilon-Nehden is shorter: it is about 800 metres long, focuses on dinosaur tracks and is described as a family-friendly themed walk. It has no strenuous climbs. This gives you a clear comparison with the length of the Rothaarsteig section when planning, without needing to estimate a walking time.
The Brilon Landscape Therapy Trail is 2.54 kilometres long and includes the Feenklang sound installation, which references Brilon’s forest fairy. The main Gewerkenweg trail begins or ends at the Haus Hövener Museum. Each of these trails offers a different focus: geological themes, dinosaur tracks, a sound installation or the museum as a reference point give you different ways to shape your stay in Brilon.
