Accommodation in Liesen
Liesen brings together natural landscapes and cultural attractions that can shape a stay in different ways: the Liesetal, themed trails and circular walks, as well as churches and a bakehouse. Different trail lengths offer different options for planning, while architectural history and seasonal baking days provide other highlights. If you are looking for accommodation in Liesen, you can choose based on the experiences you want to focus on.
Liesetal, Hilmesberg and viewpoints
Above Liesen, the Liesetal stretches for around 4.5 kilometres as a ribbon of species-rich meadows and pastures climbing into the wooded Rothaar Mountains. Woodland and open land are closely interwoven here. The Liesetal is designated as a nature reserve; a small geological outcrop in the valley has an information board from the Geological Survey.
Below the summit ridge of Hilmesberg lies one of the last mountain heaths in the Medebach Bay, surrounded by coppice woodland. From the summit of Hilmesberg, you can enjoy views of the Rothaar Mountains and the Medebach Bay. The Sauerland-Stabil-Stuhl at Hallenberg-Liesen offers another viewpoint: this eight-metre-high wooden artwork stands on Kohlberg and features a viewing platform with a 360-degree panoramic view over Liesen, Hallenberg, Hesborn and the Medebach Bay.
Trails of varying lengths
The Liesetal Nature Trail follows 13 kilometres of easy-to-walk paths through the “Liesetal-Hilmesberg” FFH area. The “Gelobte Kreuze” trail runs around Liesen, passing crosses, wayside shrines and small roadside chapels. It can be walked as an 11.1-kilometre route or in two sections of 5.8 and 5.3 kilometres. At the stops, information pillars with QR codes provide details about each location.
The Meisebock Trail is an approximately 12-kilometre circular route along the Höhenflug and is marked throughout with a white H on a blue background. The sections of the “Gelobte Kreuze” trail offer shorter individual routes than its full length; the Meisebock Trail is described as a circular route, while the Liesetal Nature Trail covers 13 kilometres. This makes it possible to compare the route options for your own plans without combining the trails into a single route.
The circular route “Bergruine Freier Stein und Pferdestall” is also offered regularly in Liesen by certified nature and landscape guide Ursula Schüngel through Touristik Winterberg mit Hallenberg. For bus travel, take route S50 from Winterberg to Hallenberg as far as the Freibad stop, where you change to route R44 towards Medebach. Check the timetable before travelling.
Churches, bakehouse and village life
St Thomas’s Parish Church in Liesen is a modern hall church with a Baroque high altar and an organ dating from 1811. The smaller church was built in Liesen in 1746 and is now a listed building. Together, the two buildings represent different periods in the local history of the church.
The bakehouse in the centre of the village was built next to the parish centre for the 700th anniversary celebration on 1 September 2013. The bakehouse team offers additional baking days in spring and autumn, when pre-ordered loaves can be collected. The specific dates are announced separately.
The Liesetal in Liesen is also home to a leisure area with a footbath. The local village community maintains it; in summer, it offers visitors a place to cool off.
Hallenberg: town history and culture
Hallenberg’s historic town centre preserves the characteristically ring-shaped street layout around the site of the castle. Numerous half-timbered houses, the parish church and the market square are part of this townscape. At the KUMP Information and Communication Centre in Hallenberg, visitors can experience Hallenberg’s Easter Vigil through multimedia. Hallenberg’s Eishäuschen houses a permanent exhibition of ice sculptures by local ice artist Joachim Knorra.
The Hallenberg Open-Air Theatre also has a long performance history: more than 100 plays have been staged there since 1946, along with several guest performances. These cultural venues add to Liesen’s attractions with a focus on town history, exhibitions and theatre located specifically in Hallenberg.
