Vinsebeck combines Baroque architecture with hiking trails through the Heubach landscape. The moated castle adds a cultural highlight; west of the town, springs and a distinctive geological formation shape the landscape. This gives you a range of themes to explore when planning your trip: the castle’s history, trails along the stream, scenic views and cycling.

Moated Castle and Church

Vinsebeck Moated Castle is a Baroque complex dating from 1720. It stands on a square island surrounded by a 17-metre-wide, water-filled moat. Much of the historic interior has been preserved from the time of its construction. Castle tours can be arranged by telephone.

Another Baroque highlight in the town centre is St. John’s Church, with its magnificent high altar. The castle and church offer Vinsebeck contrasting architectural features: the island complex with its moat on the one hand, and the church’s high altar on the other.

Hiking Trails Between Frankenberg and the Heubach

Three hiking trails in Vinsebeck start and end at a small hiking car park close to the moated castle and the Heubach, which flows northeast of the town. Trails A1 and A2 head west from the town centre, climbing the slope of Frankenberg almost to the foothills of the Vinsebeck Forest. Trail A3 passes east of the moated castle and follows the Heubach through a varied cultural landscape. The routes therefore differ in both direction and scenery: A1 and A2 climb westward, while A3 follows the stream.

The Steinheim–Vinsebeck circular trail (A1) offers expansive views of Vinsebeck and the Steinheim Basin from Frankenberg. Above the town, it passes through extensive meadows and pastures with old fruit trees and numerous wooded field margins. An abandoned quarry along the trail is designated as both a natural monument and a nature reserve. The gliding airfield is also one of the sights along A1. The circular trail is suitable for pushchairs—useful information when planning a trip with one.

The Heubach Floodplain and Distinctive Rock Layers

The headwaters of the Graf Metternich springs lie west of Vinsebeck in the Heubach floodplain. The geological formation at the springs is known as the “Vinsebeck Dome.” There, powerful folding forces have raised different rock layers into an almost vertical position. Along with hiking, the springs and this unusual arrangement of the layers give the surrounding area a geological dimension to explore.

Cycling and Gliding

Vinsebeck lies on the R1 European Cycle Route and is a popular destination for cyclists from near and far, particularly in the warmer months. Near the moated castle, the village recreation area by the Heubach offers cyclists a place to stop and relax. The Kulturland Kreis Höxter motorcycle routes pass by Vinsebeck, making this district of Steinheim part of the Bikerregion.

The Egge e. V. aviation club has been operating gliders on Frankenberg, near Vinsebeck, since 1962. This activity depends on the weather and the season. Together with the gliding airfield, which is a sight along A1, it adds another distinct feature to the town’s hiking and cycling offerings.

Steinheim as the Broader Travel Destination

The broader Steinheim travel destination has an interactive tour featuring 13 sights. It starts at the Steinheim Kump, but you can begin the tour anywhere along the route. The Steinheim Furniture Museum, housed in the former Joseph Günther furniture factory, traces the history and development of Steinheim furniture making over 120 years across 900 m² of exhibition space. Its exhibits come from Steinheim businesses and showcase furniture styles from Historicism, Art Nouveau and Art Deco through period-style furniture to modern designs. Up to four special exhibitions are held each year, featuring works, photographs, pictures and objects by local artists, collectors and historians on current and historical topics, as well as the city’s club life.

Steinheim’s annual Rose Monday parade is another local highlight. Since the first Rose Monday parade of the modern era in 1911, it has drawn visitors to the Emmer town. According to the city, it attracts up to 25,000 visitors.
