Hitdorf brings together the Rhine landscape, harbour and a rich local history. At Hitdorfer See, the history of the landscape meets opportunities for recreation; at the harbour, the area’s long-standing importance as a sports harbour is on display. There are also waterside paths and buildings bearing different traces of the past. When planning your stay, you can choose to focus on outdoor activities, discoveries about local history, or a mix of both.

Lake, Rhine and walking routes

Hitdorfer See was formed as a groundwater lake as a result of gravel extraction. Between 1997 and 2000, it was transformed into a bathing lake and recreational area. Stand-up paddleboarding is permitted on the lake. If you plan to take part in this activity or go swimming, check the current rules for water activities and bathing before your visit. There are also opportunities to get active on land: the “Hitdorfer Seen” running route has been in place since 2007. The lake and running route offer different ways to enjoy a stay by the water.

You can go for a walk on the headland between Hitdorf Harbour and the Rhine. The Hitdorf Contemplative Path offers a different focus: since September 2020, it has run from the mouth of the Wupper in Rheindorf to the ferry to Hitdorf and includes five stations for quiet reflection. While the headland invites you to take a stroll, the stations shape the route along the Contemplative Path.

In the vicinity of Hitdorf, the Wupper Estuary Ship Bridge connects Hitdorf and Rheindorf with Neuland-Park, DhĂĽnnaue and Leverkusen city centre. The bridge can be reached on foot or by bicycle. It is a landmark in its own right if you want to explore routes beyond Hitdorf.

Harbour and local history

Hitdorf Harbour has been a sports harbour with two yacht clubs since 1975; its history dates back to the Middle Ages. The harbour is also home to a crane café. If you plan to visit, check the latest visitor information in advance. Plans for the harbour square included a redesign featuring the historic crane and movable seating platforms. In the expanded harbour area in Hitdorfer Laach, a fitness station on Fährstraße, a boules court, a contemplative path and an outdoor chessboard overlooking the Rhine were installed. Four football goals, a volleyball set, spectator benches and a new sky swing were also put up there.

Architecture and local history museum

The buildings also offer a range of historical points of interest. Haus Dorff in Hitdorf is a listed historic building. The Caspers and Neess family estate on Rheingasse was built in 1666. St. Stephanus is a Neo-Romanesque brick basilica with a twin-tower façade, transept and semicircular apse; the interior features original Neo-Gothic furnishings.

The “Türmchen am Werth” local history museum hosts many changing exhibitions about life along the Rhine. Another chapter in local history dates to 1983, when the association was given a former transformer station to serve as its premises and future local history museum for the Hitdorf district.

Choose the right focus for your stay

If the lake and outdoor activities are your priorities, the lake, running route and paths along the Rhine provide a framework for your stay. If you are interested in local and architectural history, the harbour, museum and historic buildings take centre stage. Consider what combination suits your stay and use it to guide your search for accommodation in Hitdorf.
