Lieberhausen: Hiking Trails, Church and Half-Timbered Houses
Accommodation in Lieberhausen
Lieberhausen is situated on a mountain spur in a wooded, hilly landscape. Winding lanes and old half-timbered houses shape the village’s appearance. There is also an appealing variety of hiking options: a meditative circular trail starts at the Colorful Church, while a longer route leads uphill from the Agger Dam to Lieberhausen. The church, village views and trails give your trip different focal points.
Hiking around Lieberhausen
The 11.5-kilometre Luther Trail in Lieberhausen is designed as a meditative circular route. It starts at the Colorful Church and has reflection stations along the way. The route thus combines exercise with moments to pause and reflect. A second, almost equally long tour offers a different focus: the 11.9-kilometre Gummersbach Trail starts at the hiking car park by the dam of the Agger Dam and leads through the forest uphill to Lieberhausen.
The Gummersbach Trail forms a loop from the Agger Dam to Lieberhausen and back; it runs mainly along forestry and agricultural tracks. Eight information boards and three activity stations accompany the route. Its subject is renewable energy. The two routes therefore differ primarily in character: the Luther Trail is explicitly meditative, while the Gummersbach Trail incorporates its stations and the topic of energy into the route. Check current trail conditions before setting out.
The Bergisches Panoramasteig trail also passes through Lieberhausen: on Stage 7 between Marienheide and Bergneustadt, the village and the Colorful Church are stops along the route. This means that, alongside the two circular trails, a stage of a long-distance hiking trail also passes through the village.
The Colorful Church and the historic village centre
The Colorful Church is a small late-Romanesque pillar basilica with a broad nave dating from the 11th century. Its architecture gives the village a striking historical character. The winding lanes and old half-timbered houses add to this impression at village level: Lieberhausen’s character is shaped not by a single attraction alone, but also by its streetscape and its buildings.
Another cultural landmark is the Lieberhausen Faust organ, an organ heritage monument from the late Romantic period of organ building. Together, the Colorful Church and the half-timbered houses mean the village is more than just a starting point for hikes. Those interested in architectural history and village culture can include these themes in their travel plans alongside the trails.
More options in the wider Gummersbach destination
The wider Gummersbach destination has around 180 kilometres of hiking trails marked by the Sauerland Mountain Association (SGV). For orientation, local circular trails are marked with an “A” and long-distance hiking routes with an “X”. Other tours vary in length and route. The circular trail around the Genkel Dam is 9.3 kilometres long; the peninsula between the Genkel and Agger arms near Bredenbruch offers a mostly level walk of just under four kilometres.
You can also factor travel into your plans: Regional train 25 connects Cologne and Gummersbach. Bus route 318 runs from Gummersbach centre or bus station via Lantenbach, with a stop at Genkel Dam, to Lieberhausen. Check the current timetable before travelling. These connections provide orientation for the wider destination and explicitly include Lieberhausen on the bus route mentioned.
Choose the right accommodation for your trip
When looking for accommodation, first consider which experiences you want to shape your stay: the Luther Trail and its reflection stations, the Gummersbach Trail, or a combination of hiking and village culture. If you are also planning to visit places in the wider Gummersbach destination, take their locations and suitable transport connections into account as well.
