Attendorn: Cave, Biggesee and History
Accommodation in Attendorn
Attendorn offers different ways to experience its landscape and urban history: At the Atta Cave, a tunnel leads underground, while at BiggeBlick the view stretches across Lake Bigge. There are also historic sites and hiking trails. When planning your stay, you can give nature, outdoor activities and culture different priorities, and choose excursions to suit your trip.
Underground and overlooking Lake Bigge
On a guided tour of the Atta Cave, groups pass through an 80-metre-long tunnel into the realm of Princess Atta. A practical contrast to spending time underground: the temperature in the cave remains a constant 9°C in both summer and winter. This makes it easy to distinguish the visit from an excursion focused primarily on views and outdoor activity.
BiggeBlick is 90 metres above Lake Bigge. From the viewing platform, you can see the lake, Gilberg Island and the ruins of Waldenburg Castle. The forest path from the large parking area to BiggeBlick is about 800 metres long and includes uphill sections. These may be difficult to walk for people with mobility impairments. Bear this access route in mind when planning, taking your own mobility into account.
Hiking the Bigge-Lister Trail
A popular starting point for the 46-kilometre Bigge-Lister Trail is Waldenburger Bay in Attendorn. From there, the route passes the historic Waldenburg Chapel and continues to the ruins of Waldenburg Castle. Here, you can enjoy the first lovely view of Lake Bigge. If you are planning a longer hike, you can walk the entire trail over two days. You can make the route a main focus of your trip; BiggeBlick, by contrast, offers a view without making the whole trail the focus.
Town history between the market square and the Cologne Gate
The historic town walk takes you to significant sites that bear witness to Attendorn’s more than 800-year history. At each stop, QR codes provide additional information, historical images and background. You can plan your own route or follow the suggested route on Komoot. This gives you the flexibility to explore the walk in your own order or follow a proposed itinerary.
The Cologne Gate was once one of the four entrances to the medieval Hanseatic town of Attendorn. It is a tangible point of interest if you are interested in the town’s former layout. Another stop for culture enthusiasts is the South Sauerland Museum, formerly the district local history museum. It is located on the market square in Attendorn’s pedestrian zone, opposite the parish church.
Schnellenberg Castle also tells the story of the town’s long history: this striking historic hilltop castle stands above Attendorn and has a history stretching back more than 800 years. The historic town walk, the museum and the castle offer different ways to explore the past—from a walk through town, to the museum on the market square, to the hilltop castle above the town.
Plan your stay around your interests
For a culture-focused trip, the historic town walk and the South Sauerland Museum are good points of reference; if hiking is your main interest, you can make the Bigge-Lister Trail the focus of your stay. The cave and the view from BiggeBlick offer yet other experiences. When looking for accommodation in Attendorn, it is therefore worth first deciding which activities you want to prioritise, then checking how the location fits your plans. This keeps your choice focused on the experiences you actually want, without letting any one route dictate your entire stay.
