Herbram combines village traditions, church history, hiking connections and protected landscape features.

Village Traditions and Church History

At Herbram’s annual spring festival, a maypole is erected in the village square. If you would like to plan your trip around this festival, check the event date in advance.

The written record of Herbram begins in the late 13th century. St. John the Baptist Church traces its origins to a church building approved in 1482 by Prince-Bishop Simon III of Paderborn. On June 28, 1959, it was solemnly consecrated by Archbishop Dr. Lorenz Jäger. The early written record and specific milestones in the church’s history thus represent different points in time.

Protected Landscape North of Herbram

The protected landscape feature “Orchard and Shrub Complex North of Herbram” consists of 16 fruit trees, some interspersed with shrubs and surrounded by hedges. Another protected area is called “Emderbach Valley with Spring.” It includes a spring area and about 900 metres of the northern section of the Emderbach, in and south of Emder Forest, north of Herbram.

The two landscape features offer different highlights: fruit trees, shrubs and hedges in one area, and a spring area and a section of the Emderbach in the other. This gives anyone interested in exploring the landscape as well as village history a range of nature-related points of interest around Herbram.

Hiking Trail and Getting There

The Hermannshöhen access trail: Herbram begins on Neuenheerser Straße and joins the Eggeweg in Herbram-Wald. Its route provides a practical reference point for planning a hike: the trail connects a starting point in Herbram with the Eggeweg.

Bus route 484 runs from Lichtenau town centre towards Paderborn Central Station and stops at Li-Herbram, Post. From there, it is about a five-minute walk to Neuenheerser Straße, where the access trail begins. If you plan to use this connection, check the current timetable before travelling.

More Trails and Culture in the Wider Destination of Lichtenau

The municipal area of the wider destination of Lichtenau, with its 15 villages, lies entirely within the Teutoburg Forest/Egge Hills Nature Park. The Eggeweg, Sintfeld Höhenweg and WestfalenWanderWeg pass through or into the municipal area. Another option is the Wilderer hiking trail: this circular route starts at Gasthaus Engemann in Lichtenau-Kleinenberg, is about 19 kilometres long and ends in the centre of the village.

The cultural attractions in the wider destination of Lichtenau offer a variety of highlights too. Dalheim Monastery lies directly on the Paderborner Land Route and can be reached by bicycle from Lichtenau, among other places. The monastery gardens cover around 20,000 square metres, with a further 3,000 square metres of exhibition space. If you plan to cycle the route, check current trail conditions.

In Atteln, large Neolithic burial structures were built as communal tombs about 5,000 years ago. A settlement community buried its dead there over several generations. The Atteln Spieker offers a different glimpse into architectural history: this restored half-timbered house, built in 1588, is an example of Weser Renaissance architecture.

Plan Your Stay Around Your Interests

When looking for accommodation, you can make Herbram your base if village traditions, church history and the access trail are central to your trip. If you would like to include other hiking and cultural attractions, also consider the wider destination of Lichtenau. This way, choosing where to stay begins with deciding which of the topics described will be the main focus of your trip.
