Buir combines a village character with visible traces of different periods of construction. The Church of St. Michael shapes the townscape, while the Kerpen Cycling Experience Route offers a view of a larger touring area.

Village Character and Architectural History

The streets of Buir are lined mainly with one- and two-storey village houses. Some buildings from the Gründerzeit period (the late 19th-century founding era) have survived in the western part of the district. The Church of St. Michael is located at Kirchenstraße 36, 50170 Kerpen-Buir, and is a defining feature of the townscape. A half-timbered house on Kirchenstraße in Buir is a listed building. Village houses, Gründerzeit buildings, half-timbering and the church offer different points of reference for exploring the area’s architectural history.

History, Horses and Local Events

Gut Anstelburg is situated on the site of a medieval knight’s estate in Kerpen-Buir. Today, the estate runs a training centre for horses, specialising in dressage training. Its historical connection and present-day focus on dressage are two distinct aspects that add to Buir’s townscape and contemporary use.

The events calendar also highlights a specific occasion: it lists the opening of the carnival season with the ceremonial awakening of the Nubbel for 14 November 2026. The KG Löstige Buirer 1974 e.V. and KG Los Buironeros 2022 e.V. are named. As this is a dated event, check the event details in advance if you are interested in attending.

Kerpen Cycling Experience Route and Other Cycling Tours

Buir railway station is marked as point 39 on the City of Kerpen’s cycling map for the Kerpen Cycling Experience Route. In the wider area around Buir, the signposted route forms a circular tour of about 50 kilometres through almost all of Kerpen’s districts. It connects historic sites, buildings, places of interest and leisure facilities. Landscapes along the way include the Erft floodplain and the Villerücken ridge, as well as the Berrenrather and Zülpicher Börde plains. The circular route can also be explored in sections, so you can plan your trip around either the whole route or individual stretches.

Another cycling tour with a historical focus is the traditional ride organised by the Kerpen local history association to mark Open Monument Day. A report from 2025 notes that it has been held for over 20 years. Its route connects Buir, Manheim, Horrem, Sindorf, Türnich, Blatzheim, Mödrath and Kerpen, among other places. This means that a signposted circular route and a long-standing tour linked to a specific occasion are two distinct cycling options in the Kerpen destination.

Getting There and Choosing Your Focus

Buir has its own S-Bahn station and is served by a bus route. In the wider Kerpen destination, there are three Deutsche Bahn stations—in Horrem, Sindorf and Buir—from which Düren, Aachen and Cologne can be reached every ten minutes. Check the connections against the current timetable again before travelling. When choosing where to stay, consider whether you want to focus mainly on Buir’s village architecture and local history, or orient your trip more towards the wider cycling network and other Kerpen attractions.

More to Explore in the Kerpen Destination

Those who broaden their focus to the wider Kerpen destination will find more nature and culture to explore. The Stadtwald Horrem nature reserve in Kerpen was established in 1998 and covers 17.88 hectares. Kerpener Parrig and Kerpener Broich are important green spaces for local recreation in Kerpen. Well-maintained cycle paths run along the Erft and Neffelbach streams and through natural floodplain forests in the Kerpen destination. Cultural attractions include the Haus fĂĽr Kunst und Geschichte in Kerpen, an exhibition venue, and baroque TĂĽrnich Castle, with its farm shop and fruit park.
