Eudenbach: Church Art, Procession and Quarry History
Accommodation in Eudenbach
Eudenbach tells its story through very different features: the parish church showcases neo-Romanesque architecture and decorative stained-glass windows, while the Eudenberg bears witness to past quarrying and the later transformation of the landscape. An annual procession connects Eudenbach with nearby Quirrenbach. These local highlights give your trip planning a clear focus on architecture, tradition and geology.
Church, Stained-Glass Windows and Procession
Eudenbach parish church was built in 1912 to plans by Bonn architect Friedrich Tasche as a three-aisled neo-Romanesque church. The three aisles shape the church’s spatial layout; its neo-Romanesque design draws on Romanesque forms. You can appreciate the building as a whole as well as consider its architectural style. The stained-glass windows form a later chapter in the church’s history: Willy de Graaf of Essen-Werden designed them in 1954. The construction and window designs therefore belong to different historical periods, each adding its own distinctive design element to the church interior.
Traditions in the surrounding area are also closely linked to the church calendar. The present-day chapel in nearby Quirrenbach was built in 1894, and its history dates back to 1734. Since 1999, a procession from Eudenbach to Quirrenbach has taken place every year on the Feast of the Assumption. For visitors interested not only in historic buildings but also in religious traditions, this connection brings together two different perspectives: the history of a single religious building and a recurring event that links the two places.
Quarry History and Geological Walks
The landscape on the Eudenberg is shaped by an abandoned quarry. Several quarrying terraces lie within the area of a former volcanic cone. After quarrying ceased, a protected biotope developed there. The sequence of quarrying followed by the formation of a biotope makes the Eudenberg a place where landscape history and land use history can be considered together. Important for planning: the Eudenberg quarry is inaccessible and closed to visitors. It is therefore not a site that can be explored on foot.
For a geological walk starting in Eudenbach, Geological Walk G4 – Eudenberg begins at the car park by Eudenbach Church, Eudenbacher Straße 109, 53639 Königswinter. Another thematic perspective is offered by the “Siebengebirge – Geological Walk: Hühnerberg”: it explains the importance of stone quarrying in the Siebengebirge, including the Oberpleiser Land and the Oberhaus. One walk is defined by its starting point at the church, the other by its focus on stone quarrying. When planning your trip, you can decide whether the starting point or the opportunity to learn about this historic craft is more important to you.
Another historic landmark is the former Eudenbach forester’s lodge on Eudenbacher Straße, a listed building dating from 1890. Together with the parish church, it broadens the picture of the area’s architectural history; the two buildings represent different periods and purposes.
More to Discover in the Wider Königswinter Destination
The wider Königswinter destination offers further distinct themes. At the Petersberg site, an exhibition in five sections tells the story of the grounds; one section is devoted to the natural environment of the Petersberg. It also covers the building’s former role as a guardhouse and its security features. The Rheinsteig trail passes directly by the Petersberg site, and both the exhibition and access are barrier-free.
The permanent exhibition at the Brückenhof Museum includes an early 20th-century kitchen, a fully equipped shoemaker’s workshop and the “Weilberg” model railway display. The model commemorates the Heisterbacher Talbahn, a narrow-gauge railway that ran through the Heisterbacher Valley from 1889 to 1950. Special exhibitions also focus on local associations and local history, as well as works by artists from the area. These attractions are part of the wider Königswinter destination and complement Eudenbach’s themes with further aspects of nature, history and craftsmanship.
