Ennenbach is in the municipality of Ruppichteroth, near the wooded Nutscheid and the Siegtal; the village is also on the edge of the “Windecker Ländchen.” Nutscheid is a wooded ridge between the Sieg and Bröl rivers and borders Waldbröl. For trip planning, both Ennenbach as a place to stay and the scenery and hiking opportunities elsewhere in the municipality of Ruppichteroth are of interest.

A hunting lodge with park-like grounds

Stift Ennenbach is a rustic hunting lodge and holiday home in the Ennenbach district of Ruppichteroth. The house has about 120 m² of living space, three bedrooms, one bathroom and a guest toilet; it also has an outdoor terrace. The fenced, park-like estate is characterised by mature trees, fine woods and a pretty fishpond. This means the accommodation can be described not only by its layout but also by its distinctive outdoor setting.

Hiking trails and half-timbered houses in Ruppichteroth

The hiking trails in the municipality of Ruppichteroth include the Fachwerkweg, the Winterscheid History Trail and the Holzweg. On the Fachwerkweg, hiking goes hand in hand with insights into regional architectural and cultural history: eight illustrated information boards cover particularly striking half-timbered buildings, historic inscriptions above doorways and the “Bergischer Dreiklang.” The boards give the trail a specific thematic focus, rather than treating half-timbered houses merely as a general feature of the landscape.

The Fachwerkweg in the municipality of Ruppichteroth runs mostly along well-surfaced farm tracks and low-traffic roads. This description of the route is a useful guide for planning your own trip, but does not replace checking current conditions. The Winterscheid History Trail and the Holzweg are also part of the municipality’s hiking network. Ruppichteroth is also on a connecting route between the “Bergischer Weg” and the “Bergischer Panoramasteig.” Hiking the Panoramasteig is one of the leisure activities in the area around the Windecker Ländchen near Ennenbach.

Woodlands and views in the wider destination

Other nature destinations lie within the wider destination of Ruppichteroth and should not be confused with features of the Ennenbach district. The protected woodland on limestone lies west of Schönenberg and north of Hänscheid; it is considered the most important orchid woodland in the Bergisches Land. The “Bröl and Adjacent Woodlands to the South” FFH and nature reserve lies in the middle Bröl valley. Its characteristic habitats include hardwood floodplain forests, which are unique in Europe, as well as extensive deciduous forests with old-growth beech stands.

For a different perspective on the municipality, the “Auf Habichts Flügeln” route combines half-timbered houses, woodland and views, and can be explored by bicycle or e-bike. The hang-gliding site on Stachelberg, also called Stachelhardt, lies south of Honscheid. From there, the view extends across the Siegtal to the town of Blankenberg. Ruppichteroth thus offers both wooded landscapes and a specific viewpoint over the valley as different starting points for planning an outing.

Historic places in the municipality

The history of its buildings also offers further destinations in the wider area of Ruppichteroth. The historic centre of Ruppichteroth is known for its many listed half-timbered buildings. In Winterscheid stands the Romanesque parish church of St. Servatius, dating from the 12th century. The remains of the Herrenbröl castle ruins are in the Bröl valley; the knight’s estate was first mentioned in a document in 1417. These places complement the hiking trail’s focus on half-timbered buildings with church and castle history, without attributing them to Ennenbach itself.

Getting there by bus
